Painting bathroom wall tiles

We’ve recently moved house and we can’t change the bathroom until we undertake our extension next year.

I’d like to paint the hideous green wall tiles white to freshen it up until we can completely change it.

Has anyone done this before, any tips?

I would look for the tile stickers you can get now - I’d expect them to be much more likely to last and not peel compared to paint.

Ooh not heard of them, I’ll check them out. Thank you!

Proper tile paint won't peel, but it is fairly expensive. I painted my bathroom tiles from dark grey to white

@toomanyplants what brand of paint did you use? Would you recommend it?

Was from b&q, unsure of brand but specific tile paint, in rectangular tub, was around £24.
Yes I'd recommend it, goes on evenly with little roller, took a couple of coats but still looks great.

Check out Frenchic on FB and IG. I used their paint to paint my bathroom tiles and my kitchen tiles. Honestly the best and easiest way - and cheapest. I looked at tile stickers and they were going to cost me about £90 compared to £20 for the paint.
People use this paint to paint pvc doors, transform kitchen cupboards. It's amazing!

@Happyinheels ooh I’ve used Frenchic before. I never realised it could be used on tiles though. Thank you.

Did tog do anything with your grout?

@Gleps I used Dazzle Me (White) so painted the whole lot, grout and tiles. But you can get grout pens in different colours, so if you did want to define your grout then you could use one of them to go over the grouting afterwards. Some people do tape each tile off but I couldn't be bothered with that!
I can't remember off the top of my head but I think I used their Al Fresco range as it's harder wearing. I've had no problems with any peeling or chipping and it's been done about a year now.

@Happyinheels I’m happy with just plain white and like the sound of keeping it simple so Dazzle Me White it is.

Do you remember how long you left it to dry before showering in there?

@Gleps I think the official advice is that it takes about 3 weeks to fully 'cure' ie harden. But I can't remember leaving it for 3 weeks as we needed to use it.

Gleps · 11/02/2021 14:02

@Happyinheels 3 weeks!! We can’t not shower for 3 weeks haha. Sorry, a final question. Did you just paint the tiles or did you prime and seal them as well?

@Gleps 🤣 I know! It was the same here! I sugar soaped the tiles - don't scrimp on this bit. And then using a fine sandpaper just gave the tiles a light sanding but to be honest I got fed up of that and just painted the tiles. It took about 3 coats in all, using a brush doing thin coats. You can also use a roller.
