HMKofC Kitchen painting?

We have gone for a Handmade Kitchens of Christchurch kitchen which we understand gets delivered primed but not painted.

I know lots of people on MN have had them, so was wondering if someone could give me an idea of cost/paint types/ or even recommend a painter (West London/Surrey borders).

Thanks!

I have one. You’ll be so thrilled with it!

Mine did not come primed. Didn’t even know it was an option.

I hand painted my own. Two and a bit years in and they’re still looking fabulous. I had the carpenter take the doors off while he installed the carcasses and used that time to prime and paint them. I did the carcasses in situ.

Holes for the handles were drilled after painting and installed afterwards.

I found the handles myself, near identical at half the price of HMCofC.

Be aware you should varnish the oak interiors as they’re untreated. I wanted the oak to stay fresh and varnished clear, Matt varnish.

I used Autentico Versante Matt as I like a Matt finish. It’s fully washable and has a UV filter so if you choose a dark colour, doesn’t fade in full sun. While I hand painted mine, this paint can also be sprayed. I’m just rubbish with a spray gun.

thanks @SaltyTootsieToes - good tips.

When you say you did hte carcassas in situ, was that hard?

I'm really worried about doing it myself and would love recommendations of 'kitchen painters' if such a speciality exists!

Hi,

Our kitchen fitter/carpenter painted and oiled ours for us, it was definitely raw wood when it arrived . We used Osmo Danish Oil on the insides and two coats of primer and two coats of top coat on the rest.

Our fitter took all the doors off and the plinths and cornices were all painted before they were installed so it's definitely worth considering if you can paint it first.

There are such things as specialist kitchen painters I don't know how much they'd cost but I think it takes a few weeks plus cost of materials and would depend on the number of units to paint. I don't know how much ours cost because it was part of a full kitchen project but I would have thought £2k plus another £300 in paint and primer.

Have you decided what colour you're going for?

Unfortunately, you can’t attach more than 3 photos. You can see attached how the units come. They’re fully assembled, doors in, drawers in. There are what seem like extra pieces of wood. These are plinths, cornice etc that your kitchen fitter/carpenter will cut to size and install

Once my carpenter put all carcasses in place, we then took doors off (I labelled them) and drawers out. I first painted all plinths/cornice and while he was fitting those, I did the doors and drawers. He drilled holes for handles once all put back together.

I agree with previous poster about pricing. But that does depend upon the number of units and the materials you choose.

Spraying is far quicker. If someone hand paints, it will take longer but you won’t get overspray anywhere you don’t want it.

Hope this helps.

thanks for explaining that all @SaltyTootsieToes

The woman at Handmade said she thought hand painting was better than spraying in the long run as it's easier to touch up. Spraying gives a more perfect/flat finish, but if you need to cover a knock or chip, you would have to respray the whole door.

Really interesting to see it in its raw state!

We are about to have ours delivered and we’ve had a quote for painting the whole extension as well as the kitchen units.
If they’re good I’ll recommend them as they may be fairly local to you.
