How did you get your new house to feel like a home?

We moved house last year and have been very happy, but it doesn’t yet feel like home. It's maybe due to the lack of shopping opportunities (old pictures don’t seem right here, but I haven’t replaced them yet) and some place aren’t 'complete' yet. We need to redecorate in places, but I can’t bear the thought of the mess while being stuck at home so much.

What sort of things did you do to help? I love the house, and it feels right, but it still feels like we're living in someone else’s home.

Stripped out the grotty old carpets and got new. Redecorated the bedrooms. Renovated the bathroom. Got a lawn laid in the back garden. Decorated the hallway and WC. Put pictures up that went with the rooms. I have candles and throws and photographs of my kids etc. Kitchen needs doing, but that will have to wait. I'll prove ly redecorate my room at some point again too. Looks a bit meh now.

I agree with the above poster. Framed pics of family

We moved a little before you. I haven't been able to afford much for the house. But I bought a new bin for the kitchen and spent some money on plants for the hedge. Plus me and my son are planning our second vegetable patch here next spring. It does feel like home now. I wish we had made more new friends in the area though.

New pictures, lampshades, rugs, curtains, cushions, bedding and throws. Redecorated kitchen, two bedrooms. Repainted office and turned it into a walk in wardrobe/dressing room. Landscaped garden and got the tree surgeon in to fell some trees and prune some others. Sounds as though we've done a lot but actually we've still some big stuff to do - a new fireplace with gas fire and new sliding doors. Professional decoration of the hall as it's really high in the stairwell and also think about decorating the outside which is rendered. For me it felt like home very quickly even before we did the above things. I don't think a home is ever actually finished - it's always fun buying bits and pieces. Our cats are definitely more at home here as we've got a safe, enclosed back garden so they can go out whereas they couldn't in our old house!!!!!
