Beast from the East - should we keep loft hatch open

With the temperatures dropping we are worried about the pipes in our loft freezing up. We recently moved and there looks to be some lagging and insulation up there but it doesnt look like enough. Should we keep the loft hatch open for the next few days? Should we put a heater up there? It's not boarded and the tiles are visible - not sure if this is usual?

My mother has had a problem with this. Her shower pump had problems. So I would open the hatch and heat the landing well.

I mean effectively. So the heat rises.

Don't leave the hatch open. All the warm air from your house will flow up there & immediately condense all over the underside of the roof.
You can buy pipe insulation from Screwfix/Toolstation really cheaply (70p/m ish).
If you can't do that then throw an old blanket/duvet over any pipes you're worried about

Yes, get this
www.wickes.co.uk/search?text=Pipe+lagging

Also sold in hardware and DIY sheds. They will be sold out by Monday night.

You can cut it to length, and mitre it, with a bread knife.

The "byelaws" grade is thicker and better and is the one you should use in unheated spaces like a loft.

The economy grade is adequate for hot water pipes inside the house.

If you slide it on with the seam facing sideways, it will bend round curves and you can tape it to prevent gaping.

15mm is the common small bore for pipes as thick as your finger

22mm for pipes like a small banana

28mm is seldom used now, but may be found in some older houses.

Do the supply pipes first

Leave the tanks until you have done all the pipes.

And

FIND YOUR STOPCOCK BEFORE YOU NEED IT

Thanks all. I'm working today and tomorrow so will hopefully be able to get to Wickes tomorrow night. In the meantime loft hatch is shut, I know where my stopcock is and will try the duvet/blanket stopgap.

Preorder at Screwfix with click and collect now, then collect tomorrow. Otherwise it will be sold out.
