If you don’t love bifolds, would you feel differently if they were for a garden room?

Thanks to great advice on here, we’re narrowing down our plans for our garden room. Likely to go with garden retreats and now having great fun with their online cabin builder!

I loved the recent thread on bi folds vs sliding doors, and come down firmly on the sliding doors side, myself. However, I’m very tempted to opt for for the garden room. I was wondering if anyone else would feel the same?

Ps if anyone has got no folds or sliding doors in a garden retreats cabin, please let me know how you feel about them! Thank you.

We went for sliding on our garden room and have since had the bifolds removed on the back of our house and replaced with sliding. I hated them and they weren’t fit for purpose. They damaged very easily with dragging the seal across the patio. They couldn’t be wedged partially open and were a liability in the wind, which is basically all the time here. The sliding door can be opened a bit, a lot, or whatever is appropriate. We have a tiny ledge for the sliding ones, it’s raised about half a cm, so hardly a big step. There was also an issue with the style of blinds we wanted to put up, they wouldn’t work with the bifolds, so consider what if anything you would want in that regard. We would never want the entire lot open anyway, but that’s probably the only reason for going for a bifold on my opinion.

Enjoy the planning! We had so much fun doing ours 😁

We are having pivot and slide. Best of both IMO

May I ask which door supplier you are using for these ?

I don't understand the whole bifold doors 'outside to inside' thing.

If I want to sit outside, I'll actually sit outside and benefit from the Vit D. If I sit inside I don't want insects and pollen getting into my home. If I want ventilation I'll open a window.

Where's the benefit of sitting on your couch under your celing and all the sounds/smells/bugs of the garden in your living room/kitchen? Just sit outside...

I folds have more uprights so break the view a lot. Pivot and slide or just slide would be my option

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 08/02/2021 13:16

Regular french double doors you can pin back against the outside wall?

minipie · 08/02/2021 13:25

Depends what you’re going to use your garden room for. Will the doors be open or shut most of the time?

If mostly shut I would say sliders to break up the view less.
If mostly open - ie you want it more like an outdoor/indoor room - I would consider bifolds as they open more fully.

We’ve just had slide and pivot doors installed. They’re fabulous. The frames are just 19mm wide and I can’t wait for our room to be finished and the weather to improve so that we can enjoy them.

Weirdlynormal · 09/02/2021 07:11

@WaferThinIce which have you fitted?

WaferThinIce · 09/02/2021 14:33

We went with Sunseeker Doors. A bit more expensive but worth every penny. When we've saved up we will be going back to them to have more doors replaced.

Weirdlynormal · 09/02/2021 16:49

They couldn’t do what we wanted unfortunately as I did prefer the slim sight line

Great to find some feedback about installations of slide/pivot/swing/stack/fold doors (or whatever they are called!)
Good to hear from recent installations & people who have had them a while. There are not many companies who supply them & it is great to get comparisons & real life experiences. Thanks Michca
