Renting short-term from the person you sold to, is it straight-forward?

I may haev that option, it's really between that an dfinding a place to rent short-term (Airbnb) as my search to buy is still ongoing.

This is an experienced landlord, but I've read on here that solicitors really discourage thei client to do this, as short term contracts are bad for the landlord, it would appear.

The buyer mentioned this option initially, not sure if still on, but I need to start looking now for Airbnb if this is a bad idea. I@m downsiz\ing and wouldn;t want to pay a full rental price as it's just me currently in a bigg-ish house, and I can't afford a high rent. My agent said, he nnay offer a discount as he's not going to convert the house immediately, so will stay empty for a bit.
I wonder if anyone done this, and was it on a simple monthly rolling contract - which I'd prefer - and are there same rules re notice / or did you sign an agreement for the date you must vacate?

I can see that from their point of view, there is a risk of the 'tenant' not moving when promised or generally being difficult. I'm not like that at all but they don't know me.

One thing to watch out for - there were some problems a few years back I think with dodgy firms tricking vulnerable people into signing up to dubious "sale and rent back schemes", and basically taking their house!

Obviously that's not what's happening here, but I mention it in case the regulation that prevents dubious "sale and rent back schemes" might also accidentally hinder setting up a mutually beneficial genuine agreement like this one?

Dino but I thought AST must be 6months and rolling after that?

kieratea I can't inagine how those schemes worked if solicitors handled it! Anyway I'll find out later htis week whether it's still an option, but I think the've chsnged their mind - as you say legislation for these short agreements are not protective of landlords.

As a landlord I would have no problem renting the house back to you, but to mitigate risk I would want 18 months(this is the time court's are taking to evict at the moment) rent held in a holding account by the solicitor to pay the rent from every month , with the balance released to you when you vacate

It can be a day if you like..

I would be comfortable with this as a landlord. I’d probably hold a normal deposit.

I did this. I bought a flat and rented it back to the sellers fir three months. I think they signed a normal six months tenancy with an early break clause but can't swear to that
But anyway we did it through lawyers so it was all above board etc.
