What colour carpet would put you off?

I have a 3 bed, 3-storey townhouse (15 years old) that desperately needs re-carpeting throughout (though have laminate flooring downstairs).

I will be putting the house on the market soon, so I want to go for a colour/texture that appeals to most people. I was thinking a nice light grey would be neutral (the walls are painted off-white with splashes of colour from curtains/cushions/rugs) but I've read here that some loathe grey with a passion.

It's a tiny house (900 sq feet) and I want it to feel as light, airy and fresh as possible. Thank you for reading!

Anything plain and pale

A carpet is for walking on.
In our house, people also carry drinks and there are occasional spills.
Anything that the tiniest mark is going to show up on would be a real negative for me

pale cream or white carpets would have me running out the door they are a nightmare to keep clean but grey or beige would not are the carpets that are in the house good enough to employ a carpet cleaning company to do the ones that are there as new owners may want different anyway and it would be a shame to spend money on something that new owners would just rip out and replace

sabrinathemiddleagewitch · 04/02/2021 19:56

Laminate would put me off depending on the quality.

Carpet wise - choose a speckled darker end of beige.

Although grey seems a good choice, it muddies in colour very easily and IMO is harder to keep clean then beige.

HapHap · 04/02/2021 20:02

The carpets are shocking sadly! They are 15 years' old and the house has been rented for 8 years, and had a lot of footfall, especially on the first flight of stairs.

It's a small 'starter' home that will most likely appeal to first time buyers, who may not have extra cash to spend on carpets so I thought it may be a good idea to replace now, increase the appeal!

Okay so something like this would be more forgiving, perhaps?

The laminate downstairs is lovely, great quality, condition and colour, thank goodness! It's the 1st and 2nd floors that need re-carpeting.

I've looked at grey speckled and it looks a bit too office-like, so I think beige might be the way forward!

I’d agree go for an oat colour.

oohmama · 04/02/2021 20:23

We will be carpeting the stairs and landing ready to sell soon
And I'm also wondering what colour
I'm thinking a similar one to the picture you poster
Not too dark but not too light!
We have grey walls so will avoid grey I think!
I'm so bad at decisions and especially when we are going to be moving anyway! So need to think of potential buyers rather than our tastes ahhh

This carpet is perfect :)

Hard wearing twist thread, rather than fluffy, so you won't get worn down areas where people walk as quickly.

Colour has speckles of brown eg. Dirt in it, which is perfect for hiding all sorts of sins.

Great choice

cheeseismydownfall · 04/02/2021 21:06

I agree, really good choice. Proper neutral colour (personally I don't think of grey as a neutral) but the texture gives it some character and also practicality.

dillydallydollydaydream7 · 04/02/2021 21:09

We have the same house style as you with the same off-white walls and ours is a grey carpet throughout and I love it. It's dark enough without being 'dark' if that makes sense and hides a magnitude of sins with kids and dogs!

TheDuchessOfBeddington · 04/02/2021 21:10

I love the carpet in the picture. Nice and neutral.

But if it was grey I would want to replace asap.

HapHap · 04/02/2021 21:11

Thank you all so much!

Phew, that's once decision sorted :)

I'd go for a darkish oatmeal with a fleck.

RandomGrammarPun · 04/02/2021 21:15

Definitely not grey. It's not a proper neutral because it's so cold. Wouldn't go with any of my furniture or colour choices on the walls.

Oatmeal/biscuit is the safest.

DianaT1969 · 04/02/2021 21:35

I have the carpet in your photo - or very similar. It's easy to live with and goes with lots. I bought it in a hurry and there were two tones. I bought the warmer tone and realised most of my curtains and furniture is a cooler tone. In hindsight I would have gone for that one.

KirstenBlest · 04/02/2021 21:42

What Random said. A cool floor tends to make warm walls look grubby.

Dinosauraddict · 04/02/2021 21:44

I disagree with a lot of PPs I'm afraid. The three colours I would immediately think 'we will have to replace immediately' are white, cream, and beige!

KirstenBlest · 04/02/2021 21:49

Don't most people think they'll replace the carpets anyway. I was thinking about how when you go to see a house and see a carpet so grubby looking that it puts you off the house.

PresentingPercy · 04/02/2021 21:51

Me too. But we only have carpets in bedrooms and on the landing. Definitely go for a twist carpet and a warm greige can suit everyone.

Juancornetto · 04/02/2021 21:55

I like the one you've chosen. I'd be fine with most neutral carpets other than grey and shiny

Mintjulia · 04/02/2021 22:01

Neutral floors are easier to live with, you can add colour with everything else in the room. Lay rugs over the top,

The only colours I would immediately rip out are red (gives me a headache) and my mother's old swirly green & orange Wilton ( circa 1978)

NoParticularPattern · 04/02/2021 22:04

My mum has just done all her carpets and went for Tudor Twist in Mohair. Beigey type background with darker flecks. Never looks dirty even with three dogs and people in/out all the time. Looks super hard wearing too and she’s not the Hoover 3x a day type 😂

Toddlerteaplease · 04/02/2021 22:40

I've got the cream one you pictured. It's great, doesn't Mark easily and cat scratches are not visible.

ShaunaTheSheep · 04/02/2021 22:40

I’ve just cleaned carpets that I felt needed replacing, with a Vax, and was pleased at how well they came up. Might be worth a try before you shell out on replacement?

If you do replace, a light-ish but speckled beige with a short pile would get my vote.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 04/02/2021 22:44

Would replace beige as well, maybe look at houses similar price , how are they being presented . As estate agent what people seem to like , they have a better idea of the market in your area
