Can an integrated dishwasher be used as a freestanding one?

Never had a DW before and unfortunately the space we have is slightly shallower than normal. So the ones we’ve found all say they’re integrated. Is it ok or would that not work?
(Sorry if that’s a really stupid question!)

It will work fine but obviously there won't be a front cover on it. I don't understand why an integrated one will fit but a freestanding one won't! What do you currently have in that space

I doubt it as they have to be screwed into a carcass. What is the maximum size it could be?

We're using an integrated dishwasher freestanding at the moment. It's fine. The only issue we have is that without the door panel there isn't enough weight to keep the door open unless there is a weighed tray pulled out onto it (we found that 2 dinner plates gives enough weight!). If you attach a front you won't even have this issue.

Thank you all. That’s really interesting about the door weight! That would be a bit annoying although TBH having it will make so much difference to our lives (we both have disabilities) that I can put up with that!

We had a cupboard there but the housing association removed it so we could get a dishwasher, but the space is shallower than we thought. Most freestanding are 60cm deep whereas really we have about 55cm. I think some are slightly too tall as well. Gutted!

Does it matter if it sticks out a few cm? Would it stop a cupboard door from opening?

Google like mad op - they do make shallow freestanding dishwashers and washing machines. If you have no luck with the d/w maybe you could get a shallow w/m and swap them around in the kitchen?

Thank you, am trying all the places I know for dishwashers!

It could stick out a few cm. I would rather it didn’t, as it’s slightly more in the way than the washing machine which also sticks out! But if it’s the only way of having a DW then I will put up with it :o

The door weight without a front is the only issue really - we used our integrated one as freestanding for a few weeks. In the end it got so annoying having to have one person hold the door down while the other loaded it, we got a £10 door front from IKEA & fitted that as a temporary measure.

Integrated and semi integrated tend to cost more, with less choice, and you really need to mount a panel on the door. Tbh I'd rather it stuck out a few cms than looked unfinished. Could you get a panel to match rest of kitchen ?

SingToTheSky · 04/02/2021 20:25

Thank you all! It’s been really useful. Good to know we could do it but given the fact we’d probably want to add the door panel etc (HA property and the doors are that cheap laminated stuff so hard to get to size) we have decided to go for a regular freestanding one. It’s about 5cm which is probably enough to be slightly annoying when standing by the sink to wash up... and I just realised writing that sentence that we will no longer be washing up 😂

Op just to say that often the DW that say they are 60cm deep are not actually. It's worth checking the pdf of the manual. Our Bosch was billed as 60cm but the installation manual says it needs a 57cm hole and the machine itself is 55cm. They don't make that model anymore but if it is not too late you might want to check again

Also bear in mind that you may need some clearance to access the plumbing and/or plug. You could get an mdf panel cut and paint to match cabinets.

I had the same issue and mine does stick out. I don't love that but it's not a big deal.
