Beginners guide to hiring a removals firm needed

We're still waiting for a completion date but just wondered how I go about hiring a van/lorry to move us.
We're packing ourselves but will need transport and help loading it all in and need help packing things like the TV and chest freezer etc

You can get quotes from the removals firms in your area - they will either give you a standard quote over the phone (eg for standard 3-bed house plus anything special), or will come round and have a look.

They will do the loading for you.

See whether you can get any personal recommendations first of all.

Get two or three firms in to give you a quote.

Ask them if they're insured, how much for and whether you would be expected to pay any excess.

Ask them how many men they will have on the job on the day - I forgot to do this and ended up with one geezer and his slightly poorly friend. DP ended up helping, which made me really mad as we'd paid them an enormous sum of money to DO IT FOR US.

We moved about 3 months ago and used a local firm after ringing round and getting quotes from yell.com. We packed ourselves and they moved everything, including TV and fridge/freezer. They arrived so early, I didn't have time to empty the freezer - they loaded it onto truck with food still in it! They were in and out within an hour (we only lived in 2 bed terraced).

It was the first time we used removals (having done it ourselves every other time) and it was great! Will definitely use removal company if we ever move again!

I got a recommendation from friends about who to use (the fabulous Monarch, based in Essex but we moved from SW London to Hampshire). Had no idea how to go about finding a good firm otherwise.

Unless you really want to pack yourselves, or money is very tight, it is a godsend to have them pack for you, and is only a small amount in the grand scheme of moving house.

I was a bit put out when one small skinny lad turned up on packing day to do all the packing, but he got the job done in the time allotted (I went out and left him to it) and two big strong men turned up the next day to do the actual moving.

I'd recommend paying for packing too. Of all the people who take your money during a house sale, the packers and movers are the ones who deserve it the most

Oh, I have just the thing

here you go

They are a professional company how supply a van and a driver to help load and unload.

Will probably be a lot cheaper than a removals company.

If not why not look at doing it all your self with a little help from your friends

hertz do one way van rental if you are moving from say cardiff to london! Not the cheapest company but!

Hope that helps
