Best navy for a feature wall?

user86386427 · 03/02/2021 17:58

I know, I completely lack original thought, but I do genuinely like navy feature walls, I know it'll date.

Anyway, our living room is a good size and dual aspect with patio doors at one end, so plenty of light to get away with a dark colour I think and the rest of the walls and furniture are white or light. Do you have a favourite navy shade? I don't know there to begin thanks.

Dulux Trade paint is the best I've used and I'm chief painter in our house and have tried most brands over the years.

sm40 · 04/02/2021 08:18

Ooh. I'm
Looking for a blue feature wall and tempted with sapphire salute. Dulux trade is apparently the best, it's different from Dulux in the shops. It's more expensive but goes further. The few painters I've spoken too have moaned about the quality of f and b so better to colour match. Apparently!!

We have Wickes tough matt in Admiral in our house and it’s the best paint I’ve ever used. Went on like velvet and I’ve scrubbed away at it as it’s in a high traffic area and still looks new

wowfudge · 04/02/2021 08:21

@user86386427 - unless you are the poster who made the comments about it being used in every budget DIY show, then no. Dulux Trade paint is a fantastic middle ground price wise between off the shelf Dulux and the likes of F&B for great quality.

I have valspar submarine blue. It’s not quite a navy though. It’s a dark blue but has a sort of electric blue tone to it. I don’t describe colour well. 😂

MustStopSnacking28 · 04/02/2021 08:27

I had Hague blue in my old house on all bedroom walls and loved it. It was colour matched by Valspar in b&q. Decorating centre online is also sposed to be really good!

fruitpastille · 04/02/2021 08:34

I like sapphire salute and have used it a teenage bedroom but it is quite a blue navy if you know what I mean? Not as dark as some.

user86386427 · 04/02/2021 09:34

I like the look of Valspar Night's Blue Arch, what I like about the Hague blue is it looks more muted (is that the term?!) not as shiny or bold a blue as the sapphire.

@wowfudge I didn't say budget TV show. I said DIY on a budget Facebook group. It's a group for people who love to Fablon everything, put laminate over beautiful original tiles, stick diamantes on original fireplaces, and use glitter wallpaper, paint everything grey and think Mrs Hinch is the ultimate in style. Sapphire Salute is a million times better than pale grey, but it seems to be the only dark blue paint I see posted on there.

wowfudge · 04/02/2021 11:23

There was no mention of it being a FB page so I presumed it was a TV show. Anyway, everyone has different tastes. If that's what someone likes, that's what they like. Doesn't mean it has been to dissed as though it's wrong/bad.

Yes, I agree. I used it to repaint the landing during the last lockdown as it was the only one I could get hold of. I would have preferred something a bit deeper. It's very blue.

Anyone any good at gauging how much paint is needed? For a 6.4m x 2.3m wall B&Q's calculator said 3.3L, but my decorator has said a 2.5L tin should do it. Any third opinions?!

It can really vary depending on the quality of your wall, if your painting over paint / paper. Are you able to buy a 2.5 tin and a 1l tin and return the smaller if not needed? I'm not sure it's possible if getting something colour matched?
Goatsdorhone · 04/02/2021 14:39

*you're not your...argh

user86386427 · 04/02/2021 16:43

Thank you, I think I might buy a 5L anyway as I can see other walls I might like navy so I think I might make use out of it anyway 😂

@Timperleybell where did you source Tikkurila from? My friends in Europe are very complementary about the brand but it seems to be hard to come by in the UK?

I bought from Bromborough Paints in the the north west. Tikkurila also sell online. there are a fair number of types and some are intended for spraying so check you get the right type.

NoIdeasForWittyNickname · 05/02/2021 14:43

@Timperleybell Thank you. I didn't realise they're selling online now! I have to admit it was a good few years ago when I last looked for their stuff, things have changed.

Yebanksandbraes · 05/02/2021 14:49

I love F&B stiffkey blue. It's a gorgeous inky navy colour which is not too dark and not too light for me. Good luck, I'm sure whichever you choose it will look fabulous

TracyMiles · 11/02/2021 17:21

Crown, midnight navy. Lovely rich, not too dark, goes on a dream

@TracyMiles that looks lovely, we went with Valspar matched to Hague blue in the end and it looks great, I've got a 1/3 of a tin left and thinking the bathroom too actually but not sure if it needs to be special bathroom paint?

TracyMiles · 11/02/2021 18:28

I’ve just used regular paint as we shower in the en-suite so not a lot of steam in here.

I know a decorating shop in Eltham south east London sell Tikkurila paints as well as Benjamin Moore an American brand.

I used Night’s blue Arch (colour matched in Zinsser Allcoat by decorating centre online) and I love it. Be careful with very dark Matt colours as touching them leaves a chalky white mark on a lot of brands. Zinsser allcoat doesn’t do this but I’m interested to find others that don’t as it’s very expensive.
