Alternative colour to magnolia

I'm keen to repaint our living room (open plan to kitchen). We have a cappuccino coloured carpet in the living room and pine amtico in the kitchen, neither of which I'm planning to change (open plan through).

We currently have magnolia in the living room and white in the kitchen end. The magnolia is too yellow in the light we get and I'm keen to have the same colour throughout.

The kitchen is an ice blue colour.

I'm keen to have a cream-ish type colour but preferably not with the yellow tint magnolia provides.

Does anyone have any recommendations that might work?

I like Dulux egyptian cotton

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 03/02/2021 22:46

Barley white also.

Bluesheep8 · 04/02/2021 07:14

F and B skimming stone

Dulux Egyptian cotton is lovely.

Try testers of the colours suggested in different parts of the room. What they look and feel like is very much dependent on the light in the room. In our house (I have a collection of testers that would shame B&Q) Egyptian Cotton looks greyish and cold. Timeless has some warmth compared to PBW but is white, not cream looking. Natural Hessian is light and warm, a brown-toned cream rather than yellowy. We inherited a lot of Barley White ceilings which doesn't look as yellow as you'd think, but it looks a bit grubby tbh. It's actually quite nice on woodwork though.

I’ve just used Crown’s Coconut Milk, it a lovely soft light colour with no yellow tones.

Strawb1980 · 04/02/2021 08:11

Snowfall by Crown. Its a lovely warm colour without any yellow tones.

MsLumley · 04/02/2021 08:50

I love Timeless, I have it in my hall, but it can definitely look creamy rather than off-white. You should try it on different walls as the light will change the colour effect. Egyptian cotton is lovely but quite grey/greige. Jasmine White is an off-white so probably closest to what you’re looking for.

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 05/02/2021 23:05

I think aspect still makes a difference, even in a light room. Jasmine white looks great in my south facing bedroom.

One of these Dulux paints have any real colour though. Often the trick in a room with difficult light is to have colour! Plus much better lighting.

I’m just trying out a company called Ca Pietra. “Proper Good Paint”! They do a small palette of paints and I’m trying out Anders Rock for my dining room (was Lamp Room Grey) but Carters Rose might work well for the op. There are some ideas for kitchens on the web site as they sell tiles. It all helps to visualise colour and how to use it.

PresentingPercy · 06/02/2021 09:32

One!! None.

WellTidy · 06/02/2021 09:34

If you like farrow and ball, save yourself a fortune in tester pots and buy their colour fan for £15.

saraclara · 06/02/2021 09:43

I've just had all my magnolia repainted with Jasmine white. It makes such a difference, while still working with the furniture, flooring etc. No more yellow tinge, but without being cold

Bluntness100 · 06/02/2021 10:18

If you like farrow ans ball just have it colour matched in dulux matt washable or valspar matt 800. Same creamy matt finish and depth of colour.

Sorryusernamealreadyexists · 06/02/2021 10:21

We have (I think) dulux soft stone in our lounge, it’s a pinky, beigey cream colour that goes very well with greens, greys, browns and creams, wood looks stunning against it also

PresentingPercy · 06/02/2021 10:23

Farrow and Ball is a chalky finish. You can tell the difference and if you are buying furniture for a room makeover, a few more ££ spent on paint is insignificant. But F&B gives a better finish. As does Edward Bulmer, Little Greene, Paint Library and, I hope, Ca Pietra. How a paint is manufactured matters to some of us and so does finish.

CellophaneFlower · 06/02/2021 10:31

If you're going down the Dulux route White Cotton is the least yellow off white I've found without being too stark. In north facing rooms it looks really white but in sunny rooms it's more off white. Jasmine white is slightly warmer. Timeless is definitely more yellow based in South facing rooms. But that's imo, as I'm not too keen on anything too creamy.

Asitgoes · 06/02/2021 10:39

You probably know this, but, get some ( usually free) lining paper offcuts when you get your testers made up. Paint samples on these, then you can move them around the room to see in different positions and lighting conditions.

TeaMilkNonePlease · 06/02/2021 14:32

We have just painted our living room a colour match of farrow and ball's Ammonite and we are really pleased with how it has turned out.

PresentingPercy · 06/02/2021 15:51

Colour match isn’t the same as paint quality snd finish.

Chumleymouse · 06/02/2021 15:56

Farrow and ball is like living in Russia , need 4 coats. 6/10. Colour match for delux and save a fortune.

TeaMilkNonePlease · 07/02/2021 09:57

I've painted with F&B and I've used Johnstone's this time round. This went on a dream and the finish is lovely. Trade paint maybe.
Viviennemary · 07/02/2021 10:04

I got the decorator to get a Johnstones match for F&B. It looks really nice.

LetMeStraightenMyCrownFirst · 07/02/2021 10:21

I have the same 'issue' so will also follow suggestions. Thank you!

springdale1 · 07/02/2021 10:24

We paint everything in dulux sourdough (property management company) neutral but not so yellow
