Bad paint job - help!

NC to fit situation lol

Just had my house ripped apart and redone - fresh plaster (2x over -don't ask!) and painted.

However, the paint job leaves much to be desired in places.

No pics of my own because I'm too embarrassed to share but came across a few very similar quality to mine.

Any advice for getting tradesman to redo?
Don't want to be patronised by him... I get that it's an old house and it's hard to get a perfect finish but I feel a bit cheated that my new paint job looks a bit worn already

The second photo looks terrible. I’ve lived in an old house, where I appreciate the skirting/walls etc weren’t great to worn with, but you can still paint it to a higher standard than that.
Is it possible to pay lower and try re do yourself?
Did you see how he/she did the job? As in, was it all free hand (no masking tape etc)?

CheckMate2021 · 03/02/2021 00:45

Sorry should say to work with

SnarkyBag · 03/02/2021 00:48

If picture 2 was done by a professional painter and decorator I wouldn’t pay them a penny!

The socket actually just looks badly fitted itself so not sure it’s the paint that is the issue in that picture

LolaButt · 03/02/2021 10:11

If yours is like that then I really would complain.

I do all of my own painting and I can free hand the skirting board paint without tape. One trick is to also paint slightly above the skirting (a mm it so) on the wall to create a straight line.

If you don’t have any joy with the decorator, touching it up isn’t too bad a job.

First pic - I'd loosen off socket, smooth of edges of plaster and repaint before fixing socket back
Second pic - that is the shittiest cutting in ever! What did he use, a broom?! The emulsion on the skirting will come off pretty easily but you will probably end up with the colour misting so will need sanding and re-glossing properly.

I don't use masking tape when cutting in. A good, proper brush and a steady hand is my way

agree with this

Surely we need to see the actual pics to comment

MarieG10 · 03/02/2021 13:45

With reference to the second, if that's what you have then he isn't a professional painter and decorator. I can do better than that myself.

Write or email him and lay out your complaints and what you want him to do, ie redo it. If he refused then get 3 quotes from 3 (professional) decorators and threaten the small claims court. It is an easy process.

Make sure you have comprehensive pictures of the job close up

Thanks loves, all sorted!
He’s making good of it all now. Didn’t require much (any) persuasion x
