Droylsden, Manchester

Hello,
Does anyone know Droylsden relatively well please? A relative is looking to move there and is after some information on best parts to focus on and which ones to avoid.

It appears Droylsden hasn't always had a good reputation but with the introduction of the tram stops, I've heard it described as "up and coming".
Any information will be appreciated.

Eccles is on the list, found lovely house but got outbid. Don't think she's too keen on levenshulme, lived near there when at uni and it was rough, maybe worth another look though.

Frenchdressing · 05/02/2021 15:59

Levy was a still a bit rough but certainly on the up. Artisan bakery etc.

soberfabulous · 05/02/2021 16:25

Mancunian here!

Droylsden is still rough. Friend moved there and was burgled in the first week.

Levy the same I'm afraid. Friend of mine had a steel back door put in as it was kicked in twice Confused

Spacecudet · 07/02/2021 09:44

I think Levenshulme, Reddish, Woodley or Bredbury would be better than Droylsden. All have train stations, so can get into city centre easily. I used to live in Haughton Green, Denton, lack of train and tram meant it would take longer to get in, bus took ages.

unmarkedbythat · 07/02/2021 10:12

It's ok. If I didn't have DC established at schools impossible to get to from Droylsden I'd be looking there right now.

That budget won't get a 3 bed in Leve, which is experiencing gentrification and an explosion in housing costs. Gorton is more of a reasonable shot. Also Reddish. Smattering of places around Stockport but not with great links to Manchester city centre. Blackley, Crumpsall etc to the north of Manchester still have a fair bit in that price range though.

MirandaMarple · 07/02/2021 13:00

In the 80s and early 90s it was the area first time buyers from close (less attractive) surrounding neighbourhoods bought in. There were 2/3 large new build estates. It was ok back then but it hasn't moved on and I think taken a step back. Very close to the city centre though.

Audenshaw, some parts of Denton (Haughton Green), Littlemoss are close by but head East out of Manchester.

@Frenchdressing

Levenshulme. Cool place but a bit rough round the edges. On the up. No tram but bus right through to city centre and has a train station.
Rough around the edges! It’s a complete shit hole. My kids look out the windows wide eyed when we drive through Grin

I grew up in Partington, it’s a village that from the 70s, 80, 90s had a reputation for fighting but that passed. Lots of money was put in for regeneration and they did tidy it up. However families that were booted out of the areas nearer to town ( Moss side, Hulme, Levy, Old Trafford) were relocated there and it’s had an impact.

Still Trafford isn’t a bad place to live and is considered desirable from the other ‘side’ of Manchester

Frenchdressing · 07/02/2021 15:09

I don’t think Levy is a shit hole at all. Depends on what you’re used to I guess. Parts of it are rundown but parts are not.

Frenchdressing · 07/02/2021 15:16

God..,,just had a look on RM (I love it!) not much for 150 grand in the places mentioned by me anyway. Manchester is so pricey!

NatMoz · 07/02/2021 15:35

I used to live in North Reddish (husband was a first time buyer and purchased there). It did the job for the 3 years he lived there (I was there 2 years maybe). It was not my favourite location in the world but easy to get to Manchester from North Reddish train station, there's a library and a bakery selling the best eclairs I've ever had.

It was rough though and I felt nervous running at night even on the main roads.

I moved to Bramhall and haven't looked back (although much more expensive).

yearinyearout · 08/02/2021 15:28

Any thoughts on Salford? I read an article last year along the lines of "best places to buy in Manchester" and it was high on the list because of media city.

Ilikewinter · 08/02/2021 15:42

I wouldnt move to Salford.
Unfortunately house prices have shot up so much recently that £150-£175k is quite a low budget. Ive just had a quick look on rightmove, not mùch going for the areas that have been mentioned on here

yearinyearout · 08/02/2021 17:38

@Ilikewinter no there aren't, unless you want a tiny house that opens directly onto the street, or an ex council house in the middle of a massive estate. There are some that pop up in swinton but they tend to go very quickly so you have to be on the ball and keep ringing the agents (they don't keep a database or keep in touch with buyers these days)

Hmm

You're right, Manchester is getting quite pricey. There's very little in the 150k price range in the 'not so desirable' postcodes. I noticed prices seem to have jumped up in the last 2 years as well. Has demand increased that much?

Honestly it's gone mad. Every decent looking house DD has looked at in reasonable areas has had loads of viewings booked in during the first week, and gone for over the asking price. They must to be putting them on the market lower than market value to create interest then going with the highest offer, but it's very frustrating.

Do you have a link to that article please? It'll be an interesting read.

Though sometimes I'm a bit suspicious of some articles that claim certain areas are the new hot spots, it just reads like an estate agent pushing an agenda forward.

I wonder if they're doing that to drive interest during this Stamp duty holiday. Prices might settle once the holiday ends.

It's gritty Manchester. All major cities have these types of areas. I'd try hard to make children less shocked by them.
Minnie6078 · 08/02/2021 22:04

I'd avoid it all quite honestly

Minnie6078 · 08/02/2021 22:06

@yearinyearout

Sorry to derail your thread OP, but since you have the attention of some Manchester folk... Where would you buy if you wanted a 2 bed terrace within easy reach of the city centre?

Swinton is preferable but budget is £155k and all the ones DD likes seem to be going on at 150 and actually selling for 160+. Needs to be less than a mile from a tram or train station. Any “up and coming” areas she should be looking at?

Depends how easy. Glossop is lovely and only 20 mins to Manchester on the train. Also Gee cross is nice and has train station close by
500BusStops · 08/02/2021 22:21

What about Urmston or Monton? More west Manchester but up and coming or so I'm told.

Floridaflipflops · 08/02/2021 23:02

MirandaMarple gritty? I’m not sure. The streets are filthy and filled with litter. Windows are boarded up with railing on. A lot of the properties are owned by shot landlords that rent the rooms out to students and are happy to let them fall in to disrepair. There is a lot of drug/gang activity. It’s a horrible place to bring a child up in.

FManc · 08/02/2021 23:22

Urmston and Monton have both very much already up and come. No chance of getting anything for £150k-£175k price bracket the OP is looking for.
Viviennemary · 08/02/2021 23:28

I'd avoid nearly every area mentioned. They are all dire.
