Interior door replacement

I have been thinking about replacing our interior doors as they are now very old and tatty and we have two of them with a broken door handles. The trouble is when it comes to things like this I know zero!!!
Could anyone shed a light on whether this is an easy enough thing to do? We would get work people in to do it but my partner seems to think we would have to paint them all before hand? I was also wondering about cost? We have 6 doors that would need replacing in total. I know door prices vary but would it be an expensive job to get someone in to do? If anyone has done this recently and has any advice or tips they would be greatly received!

We just had ours done last week. You only need to paint the doors if you want them painted, ours are oak. They cost about £130 each from Todd Doors. We then paid £350 to have five doors fitted, hung and handles and hardware attached by a recommended local carpenter (London.) He arrived at 8am and worked solidly through until 5pm, none of the angles and edges in our house are quite square or straight so all the doors had to be planed to size then raw edges sanded and sealed. If you have a new build with solid right angles then it will take less time.

What style are your after? I have light oak doors which came pre-finished so didn't need to paint or varnish. I got mine from Savoy Timber in Wigan, they deliver all over the country. I got the handles and fixings from Toolstation, they were a really good price. The joiner charged me £50 a door to fit

If you need to paint then I would do it after they hung btw

I know someone who hangs doors ( he’s not a joiner ) but makes a good job and he says 50 pound a door is good. So your looking about that. Paint them after they are fitted .

Paint them after they’ve been hung. You can get pre-finished ones though. We’ve just had new doors but they were £230 each. There’s a lot of different kinds out there and all different prices.

Great thanks everyone it doesn't sound like it will be like too much work then! And the pre-finished ones sound the best for us! I was originally thinking white doors but the oak ones sound lovely.

If you have them hung on lift-off hinges (I recommend it) then you can lift them off to paint, and as you don't need to unscrew the hinges, they will not need adjusting when you put them back.

A carpenter can hang doors quicker and better than a general bulder or a handywoman.

we changed ours from old painted ones to wooden ones and osmo oiled them after my joiner son in law installed them for us and they look great

Thanks for this - we are thinking of doing this too. Can I ask if you go for oak doors - do you just gloss the door frame white to freshen it up? Also does it matter if you do this before or after getting new carpets/wooden floors?

Are the existing doors too fatty to keep and just paint then get new hardware for?

Much cheaper.

we went for pine doors upstairs and oak veneered doors downstairs painted the frames white so yes the doors stand out and we did the frames first then got the doors in and the carpet didnt matter to us as we are redecorating and putting new carpet in but if your floors are new cover them with dust sheets when you paint if you can paint first i would go for that
