Has anyone had any experience of tubular daylight devices?

Does it work? Is it fab? Looks wonderful but I've never seen one and I'd like to know if they actually work.

Sun pipes? Yes they work just fine. I've installed them on landings and in bathrooms. You can't turn them off so they're not great for bedrooms.

Can you only have them upstairs, Adam? (Love the username)

Roof lights are preferable. My neighbour has one in a dingy porch. Just looks silly. Why the porch didn’t get built with windows is a mystery. The light is amplified through the roof into a stairwell but the light cannot travel through floors. Single story ground floor rooms are better with lanterns or roof lights. They open and are bigger.

My next door neighbours have one into their upstairs landing. Works brilliantly.

I've got one in my otherwise windowless bathroom. Great at night when you need a pee as you don't have to switch on the electric light as the moonlight / streetlamp light comes in. Also don't need electric light at all in the summer.

I’ve previously installed them into bathrooms which have no internal windows. They really make a difference. Generally installed into the top floor of a property as the light is generated from the roof.

We had one fitted in our dark stairwell several years ago after a recommendation from our decorator. We really like it.

Why not have a roof light though? We have a big in for our dark stairwell and it’s wonderful. I can see the sky through it. It’s much much bigger and floods the area with light.

We have one running through the attic and into the landing area. It brings great light into a windowless space, I'm very pleased with it.

PragmaticWench · 02/02/2021 11:49

Couldn't have had a roof light without losing a huge area of loft space.

Those velux ones look really good / smart , I’ve been in houses with the old type ones and they work really well but always looked a bit crap from outside. Those look really nice outside. ( scuttles off to price them up 🦀 ).

ScreamingBeans · 02/02/2021 21:30

I really want one for a downstairs room and although the marketing all looks like that's fine, I wonder if that's going to be technically possible.

It depends if you have the space somewhere to run the pipe down to the ground floor ?
