Anyone know Lichfield?

I’m starting to look at places within budget (300k) that are within a relatively easy train commute of Birmingham - and after an earlier visit think Lichfield might be top of the list.

Does anyone have any advice on any particular areas/streets to avoid? I have a 3 year old who would be in nursery initially but will have to think about primary school catchments as well.

Hiya, I don't really think there's many bad places around Lichfield, however it is very expensive for what you get considering there's not many shops in the town as well. It also has a much larger population of the older generation rather than young I'd say. Have you thought about Sutton Coldfield? It's expensive there but their schools are meant to be very good and it's even closer to Birmingham.

Have you done a search on here for Lichfield as I remember seeing a thread about Lichfield not too long ago.
I'm from Stafford, so know Lichfield fairly well and it's seems to be very popular with young families as it is with older people. It's a very attractive town and I love the area around the cathedral. There's a Waitrose too.

Agree that I’m not sure there are any particularly bad areas. For that budget you should be able to get a 3 bedroom place, maybe 4 bed requiring work or slightly further out if you’re lucky.

If your commuting it might be worth looking at stuff walking distance to one of the stations.

Lichfield is a very different vibe to Sutton Coldfield. Although a city the centre is small (which I actually like). If you want something that feels more like a busy town Sutton Coldfield might be a better fit.

I have lived in Lichfield for the past 19years,before that I lived in Sutton Coldfield for over 20 years. They cannot be compared.

Sutton Coldfield is a big spread out area which is just a suburb of Birmingham.Nothing appealing about it.No direct train to London, you have to change at New Street. The Shopping Centre is soulless.I never liked living there.

I love living in Lichfield, the centre is small, dominated by the beautiful Cathedral.Very family orientated and the schools are good.

There are direct trains to London Euston from Lichfield Trent Valley.

I also find it a lot easier to get to Birmingham Airport and East Midlands.

There was a thread on here recently about Lichfield.

Feel free to PM if you want any more information.

You will find one of the factors affecting house prices is High school catchments, so bear this in mind when looking. Lots of house building going on at the moment.
Cross city line pre-COVID didn’t have the best reliability.
Happy to answer questions if you want to PM me

Hey, did you make the move to Lichfield?

Lola1406 · 06/09/2022 21:19

Hi, I’m looking to move to Lichfield, there seems to be big price differences around the city, but I’m not really familiar with exact locations so looking for advice please. I have spotted a house on Weston Road, close to Wheel Lane/ Morrisons, area looks nice but crime stats suggest otherwise. Also been looking at the Taylor Wimpy new builds on Birmingham road, just a lot smaller than Weston Rd, I’d very grateful for any advice .

Cantthinkofadifferentname · 06/09/2022 21:38

@Lola1406 do you have children? Weston Road is Netherstowe High School catchment. Netherstowe has long been regarded as the less desirable high school of the 3, but has recently joined a MAT.
Taylor Wimpey is a big estate more on the fringe of Lichfield, a new private nursery is bring built close by

Lola1406 · 07/09/2022 06:57

no school age children, son has just left school which is why I’m finally making the move to Lichfield. My main concern is not moving into the wrong part of Lichfield. I have seen the Dimbles mentioned as one to avoid, but not sure where that actually covers, whether it’s just the road or a whole area.

Cantthinkofadifferentname · 07/09/2022 08:27

@Lola1406 Dimbles is the area around Dimbles Lane, its certainly one of the less desirable areas of Lichfield. Do you need access to trains?

Lola1406 · 07/09/2022 08:59

Ohh, ok. So I see that Weston borders Dimbles Lane. I am going to be reliant on train. There is so few houses on the market in Lichfield right now. Thanks for the advice though, I’ll continue my hunt!

If you don't know Lichfield there are 2 train stations.

Lichfield City has local services via Birmingham to Bromsgrove. This line goes as far as Lichfield Trent Valley, but Trent Valley is on the West Coast mainline to London and the North West. Boley Park is good for Trent Valley if you want to walk.
