Are there any nice areas near Warrington??

OK, slightly provocative title but I need some help. We moved to Manchester fairly recently and we love it. DM has decided to move from her sleepy Midlands town to join us. She's sold her house and is on a v tight budget of around £200k. Yesterday we looked at 7 properties in the irlam/cadishead area that looked promising on paper and they were all hard no's from DM. Too small, on a floodplain, scuzzy area (DMs words).

She got quite emotional and upset. She wants to be closer to us but doesn't want to leave her nice bungalow and live somewhere she doesn't like (fair enough). We've decided to widen the search and look a bit further out, maybe towards Warrington. She doesn't want to live too close to a city centre. Neither of us know anything about this area. Any suggestions of nice areas of Warrington, on the south/east side that would be good for someone in their sixties? She wants somewhere where she can feel safe but is still affordable. Or are we doomed on this budget?

Grappenhall, Appleton, Stockton Heath, Lymm. Some parts more expensive than others and not sure £200k will go that far, but worth investigating.

What does "affordable" mean to you? And how far away would you consider?

Places like Lymm are lovely, but obviously more expensive as a result. Or Culcheth perhaps?

Sorry didn't notice your budget is already in your OP

Thanks! We've bookmarked a few properties around where you've suggested and we're going for a drive around the area this afternoon

Take a look at Hollins Green/ Rixton semi rural and just outside Irlam

We went for a little drive today and my mum fell in love with birchwood. She loves all the trees (I've never seen so many trees around a housing estate!) and got chatting to a nice older couple who live there and she's decided that's the place for her. It looked ok to me but just checking it's not a terrible choice?

It's not a terrible choice.
By no means trendy choice or full of character.. Very much new suburbia..... but isn't somewhere I'd tell people to avoid. I know a few people that live there (60s) and they seem happy

Schleckie · 31/01/2021 17:37

@happytoday73 thanks! Yeah it's not somewhere I'd choose but she's retiring in the next year or two and just wants a little bungalow somewhere safe and fairly quiet (with a garage apparently being a non-negotiable!)

Thanks everyone, I think we're getting there!

If she likes Birchwood then consider Cinnamon Brow. Similar set up but a bit closer to town. Plenty of housing estates with Bungalows

Also consider Culcheth near Birchwood. It is a small town and has a surgery, supermarket, library, cafe, restaurants and buses all over Cheshire and beyond. It's a friendly area.
