Settle an argument - this is impractical for young children

Settle an argument, first sink is what DH wants for our family bath, the second is what I want. We have one young DC and are TTC for another. I think the first choice is impractical, will be harder for little kids to use without making lots of mess and the second makes so much more sense?

No 2 looks like a flood risk. You might want to consider if water runs/ splashes to the side will it flood other things such as the toilet? Or is it easy to clean up spills?
No 1 might be too high for little hands to reach- if it’s not too tall, maybe a bathroom step.

CleverCatty · 29/01/2021 11:34

@Cleverpolly3

Both of them are frankly a disastrous choice with young children. Surprised nobody has also alerted you to the possibilities of chipped teeth, bashed faces and noses on the first sink. It’s just an accident waiting to happen with step up stools, water, hand washing teeth brushing etc. The second one will soak your entire bathroom when they turn the taps on full pelt every time.
God yeah! And A&E right now with young kids isn't where I would want to be!
HeronLanyon · 29/01/2021 11:35

Neither look at all child friendly for reasons above. If I had to have one I definitely would not choose the second. Would hate every minute of No1. Good luck op.

ramblingsonthego · 29/01/2021 11:36

We are getting a unit and sink like power linked to in our new bathroom. It's more practical.

Palavah · 29/01/2021 11:36

Neither.

  1. Is too tall and you will be constantly losing stuff around the base.
  2. Is too shallow.
GreenWillow · 29/01/2021 11:54

The first one is quite a 90’s/00’s throwback imo, nice enough, but has had its day.

cherrytreecottage · 29/01/2021 11:58

I have similar to both styles in our house, the first image one is actually fine - when DC were little, they simply used a stepping stool, but it's actually great for when they run the tap too hard as it doesn't splash everywhere. The second style, we got recently and deeply regret it..it's so shallow that as someone else has said - your bathroom floor will be covered!!

Seeline · 29/01/2021 11:58

We have one like power linked to. It worked fine with small kids. I wouldn't have either of the two you have shown.

SeaToSki · 29/01/2021 12:01

The dc also need space to put soap and toothpaste etc to the sides of the sink as they wont be able to reach all the way to the back. The vessel sink will likely result in a trip to A and E for a split eyebrow, knocked out tooth etc

NoParticularPattern · 29/01/2021 14:20

We have one in our en-suite very similar to the second one. It’s fine. My kids are splashers of epic proportions and they’ve not managed to have water running into the living room below yet. And it’s not a wet room so 🤷‍♀️. It’s the only sink that the 3yo can use without making a mess actually- the downstairs loo she ends up with water all over the floor and the main bathroom has the worst designed sink of all time- very VERY wide but also very shallow both water depth wise and depth to wall wise

NoParticularPattern · 29/01/2021 14:24

victoriaplum.com/product/mode-ellis-white-floorstanding-vanity-drawer-unit-and-basin-800mm This is ours and we like it. Perhaps slightly deeper basin than the one you’ve shown? The drawers are massive and store loads too.

Stinkyjellycat · 29/01/2021 14:25

I have sink number 2 so I can give you a definitive answer on that one. Don’t do it! It splashes everywhere for both kids and adults alike. We once had friends over for dinner and our friend went to the loo and came back looking like he’d wet himself due to sink splash back! We are about to replace ours.

chloechloe · 29/01/2021 17:27

We have this in our WC with a 5, 4 and 2yo and haven’t had any trips to ER yet. We have something similar (but bigger) in the main bathroom. There’s a lot of catastrophising on this thread!

The second is hugely impractical as the water will go everywhere. Just get a normal sink and a step, you probably need one for them to go to the loo anyway.

woodhill · 29/01/2021 17:34

I like my flat bottomed sink which is similar to the 2nd picture but was not keen on having something like the 1st picture as would be more difficult to clean

woodhill · 29/01/2021 17:43

Mind you mine is oval so wider sides.I don't have young dc and we have a traditional basin in another bathroom.

Vanity unit is great for storage with deep drawers and better than the cupboard one I used to have with a round basin

redcandlelight · 29/01/2021 17:48

impractical. full stop.

first one - how will you clean that grove under the basin. grot central.

the second one needs careful adjusting of the spout or water will splash everywhere.

ScrapThatThen · 29/01/2021 17:52

Sorry you didn't win the argument with the Mumsnet jury OP... But at least your dp didn't either!

samanthawashington · 29/01/2021 19:48

Both not good for small children. The second will ensure a co scantly wet floor.

ButwhereisMYcoffee · 29/01/2021 19:51

Is that a happy d sink? We have similar and it’s fine!
