New kitchen - help decide colours please

We are renovating our house, it was a long time plan, only now things are falling in place. Our flooring is Honey coloured laminated one. Having an island is a dream. We are keeping the floor, and the walls are bright white [Might go for feature wall, but not decided yet]. I am trying to decide on the kitchen cabinet colours that would go with honey coloured flooring. There are lots of suggestions in internet for white/cream colour cabinets, but my current kitchen has white/cream wooden cabinets. So I wish to go for a different shade, but not entirely against it, so will be Plan B [Might be cream high-gloss cabinets and deep-blue island]. It will be a open plan kitchen, but not too big. The cabinets will be high-gloss ones, not wooden. I liked the Cobalt pearl cabinets, but just wondered if that would make the open plan kitchen too small. I saw some combo coloured kitchens, but I am afraid it would be too much colours in a small open plan. I am not into Grey colours. There was a picture for bright yellow cabinets, they looked lovely, but not sure if the novelty would wear off quickly. We are looking into Grupo Alvic Luxe cabinets, they have some nice designs.

Kindly could someone suggest on the colours please - and also what colour would you choose for an island.

One more info, the island will have the gas hob.

Thank you for reading. :)

Anything but grey, or even gray.

ComfortFoodCorner · 29/01/2021 11:52

@Ifailed, thank you for your reply. Yes. I don't want to go for Grey too.

I keep wondering yellow cabinets and deep blue island would be the way to go.. I love both the colours. would be an interesting combination. :)

If you have a honey coloured floor I would want to offset that with something a bit cooler. The Cobalt blue or a deep blue on the island with white or elsewhere would be lovely. I'm not a fan of the yellow and think it will date quickly. Definitely not the yellow and blue together!

@FoofOfTheWalkingDead Thank you. Yes I agree, Yellow would be out of date very soon. White+Cobalt blue is good choice. What colour would you think for worktop?

@ComfortFoodCorner, I would possibly go with a marble/quartz looking countertop. Not grey but not completely white so that there is a bit of contrast with the white cupboards.

Thats good idea. I saw some mild beige with silver sparkled quartz tops, they looked good. I have black laminated worktop now, no matter how clean it is, even a tiny grain of flour stands out..
Thank you for sharing your inputs :)

How about a pale blue like in this picture? I'm obsessed with it!

Oooo, I like the pale blue!

Suzi888 · 30/01/2021 19:19

Marble or Quartz, but I play it safe. The cobalt blue is big right now, I’d worry I’d go off it though.

GenderApostate19 · 30/01/2021 20:26

I wish I hadn’t gone for high gloss, it’s a nightmare, shows every mark and smudge, you can’t just wipe over, it needs careful polishing/buffing after cleaning.
I have very pale duck egg blue units with a ‘greige’ driftwood worktop plus black glass hob and sink, rich cream large metro tiles.
My floor is high gloss charcoal grey with hints of blue and copper, also very unforgiving 🙄

Do you really want a gas hob on your island?

Induction is much slicker and environmentally better. (I'm an enthusiastic induction hob convert).

Yes, cobalt blue is attractive now. When we went to the interior kitchens, they had one shaker style Island in deep blue, I couldn't move my eyes off it. I chose quartz over granite, as we use lots of masalas in our cooking. Hopefully any accidental spillings would be easy to clean off quartz.

Hi, thank you for your reply..I didn't know high gloss has this disadvantage. I hope cream/white shaded ones will show the marks lesser, rather than darker ones. I have wooden cabinets now, and I don't clean my house regularly. So when I get to clean the cabinets eventually, it's always a huge task. That's why I preferred glossy ones, so it's easy to run the damp cloth over it, quickly and done with. I was thinking of dark reflective splash back, after reading your post, may be I will think of something lighter..

Hi Acovic, thank you for your message. I use clay pots or iron pans in my cooking, all with curved-bottoms. These pots were collected from India over the years. So I would be sad to let go off them. When we looked for houses to buy, I see induction is the new trend, and they look lovely, much easier to clean. And with modern kitchen they seem to blend really well. With Island hob, induction is definitely the way to go. After we settled to renovate our home instead of buying a new one, we decided to keep the gas stove, until we are ready to move for induction. Finding the right pots and utensils is a big task now, and moving to induction is a major life style change, which we will consider later...

I think if you like colour, go for colour and don’t be shy about it or worry about trends/dating/whether it’s “too much” for other people (unless you’re planning to sell in the next few years!). But if you’re less certain then keep the more contraversial choices to more easily changed bits like paint/tiles/light fittings rather than the cabinets in case you end up disliking it.

How about
Cobalt blue island
Paler blue lower cabinets
White/even paler blue upper cabinets where you have any, maybe with some wooden open shelving to complement the flooring
Bright white walls

You could bring some yellow in a glass splashback, or in a light fitting over the island. Various accessories yellow, or even bring in some orange or aqua. White walls. That sounds bright and fresh to me! But I think the yellow/orange will help with warmth; otherwise all blue/white could feel cold esp if any way north facing. Although the flooring sounds warm.

Personally I lust after a deep aubergine purple kitchen with red/orange/gold/bronze highlights, most people would hate that!
