Hi everyone

I am trying to buy a house but it seems that the best I can afford is in wombwell. I work in north Sheffield.
Does anyone have experience of driving from wombwell to Sheffield before lockdown. How bad is traffic.

Please help!

What main roads will you need to travel on? Your journey is very specific but there may be some major roads that a few people on here travel on.

I can't help too specifically as I travel from South West Sheffield to Doncaster and vice versa but I do travel on the M1 so could help there.

As long as you check there's no traffic on the M1 its useful fine, busy, but fine. Its 50 in the morning from the Rotherham/Sheffield junction and up past Meadowhall but I'm not sure where the 50 stops.

Coming out of Sheffield to go onto Parkway is an absolute nightmare pre-lockdown. Always going to be queuing after the Catcliffe Morrisons junction after around 3pm. Travelling into Sheffield in a morning there are always big queues there too but if you work in North Sheffield I presume you wouldn't need to go to the bottom of parkway if at all.

There are lots of affordable areas surrounding North Sheffield and wider, I don't believe that Wombwell is the only place you can afford to live in the entirety of South Yorkshire. Doncaster has nice areas- Tickhill, Bawtry etc. Rotherham has Wickersley, Whiston, Ravenfield etc. Sheffield has Eckington, Sothall, Beighton, Killamarsh, Wales, South Anston

usually fine, not useful fine that should read.

Vslightlystressy · 27/01/2021 16:24

Hi - I have done that quite a bit - there can be delays getting on to the M1 - it depends where in Sheffield - near Meadowhall! I would allow 40 mins...

Frouby · 27/01/2021 16:36

It can be a bit of a nightmare. I live a couple of miles from Wombwell and dh has always said Sheffield to here can take as long as Manchester to here if you hit traffic at the wrong time. There is always public transport, train station at Wombwell that has a line to Sheffield. Or if you are on a tram route, there is a train tram from Parkgate, Rotherham. Will probably take about 20 mins to drive to.

Hi can i ask which part of sheffield?
I use to live at oakwell in barnsley and travelled to broomhill in sheffield for work i use to have to give my self an hour for travel. As penistone road was a nightmare xxxx

Helpiamconfused · 27/01/2021 17:13

Thanks everyone for the kind and very helpful replies

@stronglikemytea, I work in S5 area of Sheffield. Around Southey

@optimisticpessimist01, I am afraid I am a bit, should I say, like too much comfort. You are right in affordability of a lot of areas. I want a recent build house for warmth (good energy ratings they always have compared to old houses). Less than 10 years old. Secondly, I want to limit my travel to 30minutes max. Again I know I am the one limiting myself. And like most people, I will like a neighbourhood that I can take a walk at night and not be afraid of being ....

I used to commute from Hoyland Common (about 3 miles from Wombwell) to the centre of Sheffield and generally it took about 40 minutes.

However, most of the traffic was the other side of Southey, nearer to the city centre, so you shouldn't have any problem doing Wombwell to Southey in 30 minutes.

One thing I would say - Wombwell as a town centre has gone a bit downhill in recent years, with shops closing etc. In fact, it lost its post office this week. I still have a soft spot for the place (I was brought up there) but I'm not sure I'd move back. You can check out the Wombwell Wise page on Facebook for background.

Which bit of Wombwell is the house in? And what's your budget/requirements? There may be somewhere else around here that fits the bill.

Happy for you to message me directly if you'd prefer.

stronglikemytea · 27/01/2021 17:21

@Helpiamconfused had a nosey on maps and looks like you just miss where all the traffic usually sits near Hillsborough stadium. Depending what time you set off id probably say 40/45mins. Its mainly bypasses till u get to penistone road so not really sat in traffic. I still live in barnsley still so hello, nice to have someone local on here xxx

stronglikemytea · 27/01/2021 17:24

Just re read your OP.
Didnt realise you had not already lived here.
I know wombwell, well lol have friends live there. Totally depends on which exact area, the high street is in decline has a bad name for pickpockets. Wombwell isnt highly desired. Have you looked at birdwell? Worsbrough? There close to bypass and motorway u need to get towards sheffield also xxx

Helpiamconfused · 27/01/2021 19:21

@OliveHenry, my budget is 140k max.

Doncaster is too far really. I think.

@stronglikemytea, hello, nice to meet you. I have looked at Birdwell but found nothing desirable. Only terraced that doesn’t have parking are within my budget. I need parking.

I am looking for 2 to 3 bed, with parking.

stronglikemytea · 27/01/2021 20:08

Private message if easier xx

JaneyHenderson · 27/01/2021 20:19

I live in south Sheffield and work in Wombwell. 35 mins door to door at the moment. Pre-lockdown anything between 45-60mins at rush hour.
Wombwell to Southey- 30 mins easily I would say. DP lived in Hillsborough for bit and it took me about 25-30mins then. There's a few sneaky short cuts through Grenoside!

TBH Wombwell is like any ex mining village. Some nice parts; some not so nice. High deprivation in parts. Most of my kids are super lovely Smile

Hi OP

Sorry it's taken a while to get back to this thread.

I've had a look on rightmove, and it does seem that most of the (relatively) new builds are in Wombwell.

How quickly do you need to move? They are just starting to build masses of new houses at Hoyland Common, so they might be worth looking at.

Some more info here: Hoyland South Masterplan

Is the newness of the house the most important feature? If you had to compromise on something would it be commute distance? Or age of house? Or parking?

Do you need to consider schools?
