We are, hopefully, moving into the house that our children will grow up in. It is the first time that dh and I have enough money to buy the things we would like (rather than always going for the cheapest option, although we don’t have loads of money, and I am quite tight!)
Suddenly, having choices is a bit overwhelming. My main priority is to get things (carpets, sofas, curtains etc) that are family friendly, long lasting and still look ok when they are getting worn. So, for example, a chunky wooden table with a bit of a knock looks better than a swanky glossy table with a dent. I hope that I’m making sense!
Anyway, please tell me all of your best ideas!

Sofa - IKEA Ektorp. They have removable covers, which got chucked in the wash pretty regularly when we were in the sicky-up babies stage. Ours are black and we've re-dyed them a couple of times in the washing machine too, to keep the colour strong. But there's also the option of replacing the covers entirely if they get too worn or if you fancy something different in a few years! Had ours 10 years now - still in good condition.

Second hand! Don't dismiss it. We were given an Ercol dining table, extendable so can seat everyone at Christmas. It's classic mid-century so goes with everything. As it was free I have had NO problem in it being used for every craft activity going (it does have a cover), safe in the knowledge (now) that a quick sand and re-oil and I can sell it for £££ as they're now in fashion.
Sofa: Try them all out and go for comfy. Make sure it has the latest fabric treatment and you can unzip and wash covers if needed. We bought Parker Knoll recliners, sofa and chairs very comfy and supportive, we can sit side-by side almost and watch the TV, all reclined like the cinema.
Curtains: here I make my own, but buy quality fabric and Solproof lining - for large curtains get detachable linings, you can wash these in the machine , and I brush the curtains outside when I spring clean, hang them over the line and brush away (not had them cleaned, they're heavy! )

Carpet, Lino etc, go for a commercial grade fabric for heavy wear areas, our hallway still looks like new 10 years & numerous dogs horses etc on. (yes daughter brought one in once)

Thank you for the brilliant ideas. Commercial grade limo and carpets sound perfect. Do I need to go to a specialist place for those? I think sofas with washable covers is a good idea, and we will be buying our dining room table secondhand; there seem to be a lot on marketplace at the moment.
