What is it with Grey?

I saw a house today which had been modernised but it was so monochrome. Flat grey kitchen, grey carpets, black doors and woodwork, very dark grey radiators. And it was all brand new so I couldn’t justify changing it. Someone will love it but sadly not me.

@VinylDetective

Anaglypta and Lincrusta were widely used in Edwardian houses, they look beautiful with those lovely Minton tile floors from the same era. One of my friends has an Edwardian terrace and had the sense to leave both alone. Her hall is gorgeous.
I have the original Minton tiles too - just had them restored. My Lincrusta is definitely original too!
ShowOfHands · 26/01/2021 18:45

My SIL has stunning Minton tiles. I'm always very envious. We have the original quarry tile in the hallway but the previous owner used some sort of industrial glue to stick a disgusting carpet onto them and we can't get it off. I keep trying.

Grey is well out now. Navy is still on the climb. I won’t ever change my baby walls. So practical!

Dark green and pale pink, fake wall panelling, tweed sofa fabric are all coming in now. No more crushed velvet sofas.

I feel like stencils are due a comeback 🤔🤣

StormBaby · 26/01/2021 19:00

*navy walls even 🙄

Frenchdressing · 27/01/2021 00:30

Pink is in. Sulking room by F and B is everywhere.

I like a bit of grey but t h I can never decide so paint everything white! I did do a room in polished pebble but it looks blue!

Frenchdressing · 27/01/2021 00:35

My parents had that blown vinyl on their walls for a while. Hideous! Wonder if that will make a comeback! Or woodchip!

PresentingPercy · 27/01/2021 07:29

Dark colours only suit some houses and some rooms. A whole house is unlikely to be painted dark green unless the owner is devoid of taste.

Pink has never been out of fashion with interior designers. It’s just posted about a bit more now. I’m using Peignoir for a bedroom and I prefer it to Sulking Room pink. Again it’s worth looking at interior design magazines to see trends but pink has been around for years now. It goes well with grey after all!

tilder · 27/01/2021 07:29

Everything seems to come back into fashion eventually. It's why people spend so much time uncovering, restoring to replacing original features that others covered up or got rid of.

Nonamesavail · 27/01/2021 07:50

Just lacks personality and soul

Frenchdressing · 27/01/2021 08:51

@cunningplan101ooh love your use of a bit of Bordieu there! Home decoration is a good example.

And yes far too much snobbery on here!

What’s the issue with eyelet curtains? Pp seemed to object to them

JaninaDuszejko · 27/01/2021 16:10

It was me that said about eyelet curtains. I do have some (made to measure so properly lined) eyelet curtains in my house but I think the issue with them can be that because they use less fabric than pencil or pinch pleat curtain toppers they both are and look cheaper. Particularly if they are off the shelf, unlined and not big enough for the window.

@79andnotout

I love grey as a neutral, I have a lot of it in my house but combined with a lot of colour too. I have dark grey units in my kitchen but they're only on ground level and combined with a thick teak worktop, green leather sofa, open wood shelving and copper lamps and handles. Used with colour it really adds depth. I'd everything is shades of grey it just zaps the energy out of the room, and it looks like a bad grey scale painting!
I am so over grey, but your kitchen sounds stunning '79andnotout:

Correction! I am so over grey but your kitchen sounds stunning @79andnotout

@cunningplan101 @Frenchdressing I love a bit of Bourdieu too ( so much more intelligible than Foucault). This is la Distinction writ large. But we are all products of our class and environment and I suspect Mrs Hinch isn’t aiming for our custom. I could go in but I’m afraid of sounding appallingly snobbish so I’ll stop.

Another grey hater here. I love colours and I don't care what others think of my home, as long as it's warm and relaxing to me. Grey is cold, it's serious, it's dull, and it's like living in an office. Can't think of anything worse!

Oh that fake wall panelling is hideous.

I feel like the dado rail and border should make a come back!

Instagram is full of people stencilling their tiles.

I really don’t like grey either and won’t be having any in our house. We’ve just moved, it’s Edwardian with lots of original features but sadly not any lincrusta / amaglypta which can be beautiful in the right setting. I think I might get some for my planned new ensuite for below dado.
We are having lots of green in this house as we are surrounded by trees and I think it will look great. Also may have some pink colours such as crimson red by F and B which is just beautiful and maybe also some Sudbury yellow which is another great colour.
I don’t think we will be going down the dark blue route as our house is already quite dark (having said that might have Bancha somewhere is it looks amazing against our various mahogany features)
So many colours to choose from, I just don’t get the grey craze! But each to their own and it can look good in moderation and in the right setting

NewHouseNewMe · 29/01/2021 09:57

For this saying their lincrusta / amaglypta is genuine 1930s, how would you know? Would you know from looking at it?

VinylDetective · 29/01/2021 10:26

Lincrusta is the brand name. It was first produced as a luxury product in the mid 19th century - it was used on the Titanic. It seems it’s still in production using the original rollers - hence the traditional patterns - and is stupidly expensive. If you google images, you get some beautiful examples, the patterns are very ornate, some of the Art Deco ones are particularly gorgeous.

Ghislainedefeligonde · 29/01/2021 19:26

Yes I’ve seen an art nouveau one which would go well with the fireplace in the room I’m thinking of. Can just about afford it for a single room with dado height one!
