Does anyone sleep in loft conversion

And have velux windows?

Does it stop you from sleeping when the rain and wind is bad?

Considering buying a house where main bedroom is in the loft but I'm thinking will the noise be bad?

We did for 6 months in between houses. Wind and rain wasn't a problem... the summer was unbearable though, absolutely boiling all the time.

Molehillfromamountain · 20/01/2021 17:17

We have one right over the bed. A heavy rain storm will sometimes wake me up but I quite like listening to the rain outside.
It wouldn't put me off buying a house.

If they are velux branded you can also get excellent blackout blinds which are amazing for the early morning sun in summer.

titchy · 20/01/2021 17:17

Can be noisy but I love it! Something very comforting about hearing a howling Gale outside and being snug under a duvet!

Can you check the specs of the insulation? Top grade stuff means you won't get too hot in summer.

ChaseTheSun · 20/01/2021 17:22

We do and initially it did bother me but you get used to it very quickly. We have proper velux black out blinds which are great at blocking out the light.

The thing that bothers us most about being in the loft room is the heat in the summer. It can be unbearable even with blinds closed all day!

Invest in some good fans, or even better, air con-you’ll need it!!

JaninaDuszejko · 20/01/2021 17:26

When it was super hot two summers ago (2018) we actually chose to sleep in the loft because with the velux windows wide open all night it was much cooler than our bedroom on the first floor.

Lovetoridemybicycle · 20/01/2021 17:31

It's not the noise that wakes me up, but having occasional droplets of rain land on my face where I left them too wideGrin. - (one window is above me)
Love it up there in the summer, it's the coolest place, you need windows on both sides to allow the breeze to go through. Windows on just one side make it hot. And use the proper Velux black out blinds

GrumpyHoonMain · 20/01/2021 17:55

I loved sleeping in the loft under a velux window when I was pregnant over the summer as it helped to keep me cool. The light didn’t really bother me. It was ok in the winter too - just need decent radiators and good bedding

MarshaBradyo · 20/01/2021 17:56

Ours has velux windows and blinds and it’s really nice. Even with wind and rain. Not too loud

Respectabitch · 20/01/2021 17:57

Yes, our bedroom is loft conversion with velux and a Juliet balcony. The rain is no problem, I find it soothing. It can be very hot in summer but a portable air conditioner sorts that out.

Echobelly · 20/01/2021 17:59

Good to know, as we're planning on loft master bedroom later this year!

MrsJamin · 20/01/2021 18:59

We're up in the loft which I love apart from the noise of wind and rain and the extremes of temperature are bad as it was made in 1995 and I don't think it needed as much insulation as you do now. So it might be a lot better now built to modern building regs.

helpmum2003 · 20/01/2021 19:04

I've slept in 3. The noise doesn't bother me. The biggest difference between them was adequate insulation or not and extreme heat/cold in summer/winter. Adequately insulated with decent blinds it's great.

SuitedandBooted · 20/01/2021 19:38

You need the best possible insulation, or else it can be awful in the summer and cold in the winter. As you are considering a house which already has a loft room it might be hard to judge the build quality atm

gillyweed · 20/01/2021 19:43

We do, it's about 20ish years old now, double height ceiling and 3 velux. The light is more of a pain than the noise, I've invested in black out blinds which are fantastic! Sometimes the rain wakes me but it really has to be blowing a gale, I quite like hearing the elements so close while I'm nice and safe and warm.

Sausagis · 20/01/2021 19:51

As it happens, tonight will be one of those nights I have trouble sleeping! It's not the velux so much as being in the roof space - slightly exposed house built in late 1700 or early 1800 and when it's stormy the rain is loud and the wind shakes everything.

I have the duo blinds from velux which are awesome (1 black out blind and 1 privacy blind which blocks out the worst of the sun in summer)

CouldBeOuting · 20/01/2021 22:10

Our velux window is directly over our bed. Really heavy rain sometimes wakes us but usually it is actually quite relaxing hearing the rain. It reminds us of camping holidays........

DevilDamo · 20/01/2021 23:05

It’s a little like Marmite... you either love or hate it. In addition to the blinds, Velux do also offer sound resisting glass, which will help. Or don’t position the bed within the restricted headroom roof slope and if space permits, position it on a side/gable wall.

OneEpisode · 20/01/2021 23:08

You can get automatic ones too, that shut with a remote control or when they sense rain. So you can leave them open in hot weather.

Monkeybunkey · 21/01/2021 10:40

My bedroom is in the loft. Last night, I considered sleeping downstairs in the spare room due to the howling wind outside, but as others have said, it's cosy listening to the rain outside while snuggled down in bed. I have blackout blinds on all Velux windows which are fantastic and have windows on both sides so can get good airflow in the summer which keeps it cool up there.

Hadjab · 21/01/2021 14:06

My kids are in the loft - I’m below and regularly get woken by the sound of rain against my windows, whilst they could sleep through a hurricane

Isit2021yetplease · 21/01/2021 14:09

Agree the rain is really nice to hear and not a problem. The heat I. Summer however was unbearable and if you have the veluxes wide open the sun wakes you when it rises at like 3am! I wouldn’t do a loft again without putting air con in.

ScrapThatThen · 21/01/2021 14:12

It hasn't been a problem for my very light sleeping husband and we have a metal covered flat roof dorma too.

Ladyof · 22/01/2021 21:59

Sounds like it not a problem and many actually enjoy it, great news!

We do and I really like it too. Our house is exposed so when it rains or is really windy it thunders down! But I love it and find it soothing
