Concealed cisterns

Dh has his heart set on them for the new bathroom loos. I'm worried our walls will look bare with them!

Anyone have them? Like them, hate them? The button mounted on the tiles would be magnetic or something so access is behind according to bathroom designer

I have them. Ours are a bit of a pain. The cisterns of both loos have developed faults and they've been fiddly and difficult to fix because of the limited access. There is a tile in front secured with silicone instead of grouting, but it still meant getting a plumber in to remove the tile in order to identify the type of cistern and the fault (in my previous house, I could just lift the cistern lid and take a photo), and then a second visit with the spare parts in order to fix the cistern and re-seal the access tile. It meant the whole process was expensive and long-winded.

As previous poster they are a nightmare if anything goes wrong unless easy access is built in. You live and learn with these things (I should have listened to piglet John back in 2015!) Have learnt in new house!

Ours is an absolute nightmare as you just can easily gain access as the only way in is behind the buttons and with one hand in there you can't see a thing and so just have to try and feel the issue out. As such we have had a constant leak for the last 2 years which replacing a small rubber gasket would fix, but as it's so hard to get in it's just not worth it. We have also had issues with it not flushing or refilling correctly and it's not something that you can fix by yourself due to the limited access so you have to call a plumber everytime...

We did think about replacing it with a normal toilet but cannot for the life of us find tiles to replace the ones behind it and so it just has to stay there. (luckily we are moving soon so it will be someone else's issue!)

If you don't have a shelf above that you can lift off to properly access the cistern don't do it, it will only cause you problems. They look nice but they are completely impractical

oh, and also plumbers (at least a majority of the ones we have contacted) don't tend to want to come out and fix them as its such a small job which is a pain to do so usually its not worth their time unless they are doing other jobs for you...

Ours are all concealed in the bottom of a cupboard unit. Bottom shelf of the cupboard is removable (though you do need to poke a knife in to lever it up). Only issues we've had have been with two flush buttons, and it's been fine to sort out. Doors are on brackets that pop off and other shelves can be lifted out if we need them to. They house all the towels, and bathroom paraphanelia. Think they're great. I prefer empty spaces / an unclutter look though.

Have 2 and really like the clean lines, everything hidden. Had them for 4 years and never had a problem. We have large format tiles so the top of each cistern is just one tile that is kind of a lid and could be fairly easily lifted off and then re-sealed if we needed access.

we have them but got all the horrible push buttons replaced with proper handles that actually work. Definitely make sure they are installed with an access point if something goes wrong.

We've got it with a tiled shelf sealed with silicone on top. It did go wrong and it was easy to mend

Gemma2019 · 19/01/2021 23:35

I much prefer the look of them to normal toilets but every one I've had so far has been a total nightmare. They don't flush as well as standard toilets and go wrong too often. I'm never buying one again as a toilet should be functional as well as aesthetically pleasing.

If you are buying one make sure it's a really decent well known brand and not one of the cheap internet ones.
