Chipboard instead of floorboards- advice to stop creaking

Recently purchased a 9 year old Barratt home. Just decorating and pulled up carpets to see why floorboards are creaking. Can't believe it. There. Are. No. Floorboards. It's just bloody chipboard!!! Any advice to stop the creaking?

Screw them down.

ivfbeenbusy · 19/01/2021 21:01

Ummm that's normal for a new build house..... 🤔
It's been decades since individual floor boards were used as part of floor construction

magicstar1 · 19/01/2021 21:04

Are you sure it's chipboard and not Smartply? There's not much you can do except screw them down.

Chumleymouse · 19/01/2021 21:05

They all creak , it’s the worst flooring there is. Don’t just screw them down more without knowing what is underneath ( pipes, cables)

redcandlelight · 19/01/2021 21:08

screw them down.
but be mindful of where pipes or cables lay.
a relative managed to drill through all 3 (gas/water/electricity) drilling down the boards. that was fun explaining this to the home insurance...

NavyBerry · 19/01/2021 21:11

Oh is it even safe? I thought it is toxic

Beaniecats · 19/01/2021 21:14

3.5 year old new build exactly same issue here

Chumleymouse · 19/01/2021 21:19

It’s only toxic if you eat it 3 times a day .

Sprig1 · 19/01/2021 21:24

Screw them down.

Frickssake · 20/01/2021 00:23

Will screw them down if no other way. Will Google for a tool that tells me where pipes/ wires/ joists are first though! Any recommendations?

Screw them down rather than use nails, only thing you need to do. Ex was a builder

Does it depend on the builder? Previously Lived in a house built circa 2000 and that had floorboards?

OMG. The previous owners must've got carpets included when they bought the house. Not only are they thin and poor quality ( as is the underlay) but each stair has a piece of carpet! Thirteen bits of carpet have been cut up and attached by staples and ( what looks like) expanding foam!!!!

@Frickssake

If you bought from a very small developer that was very high quality/self
Build built for themselves then possible they would have used floor boards but most volume builders use sheet flooring nailed to the joists and have done for years
