This house has gone viral. It's in Leeds

I'm not sure I could buy a house with the previous owner in the back garden..

It wouldn’t bother me if he had been tucked away in a corner but the grave is slap bag in the middle of the lawn.
If you wanted to put a patio in then you would have to slab over it and then every sunny day you would be sitting on top of the grave.

changedmynamelol · 19/01/2021 20:41

It would really creep me out. 👻

lovelemoncurd · 19/01/2021 20:48

It must be a Leeds thing. I wouldn't mind being buried here at home or ashes anyway.

UmmH · 19/01/2021 20:51

It wouldn't bother me. This used to be common practice. I've seen houses with quite elaborate headstones in the back yard, with entirely unrelated people living in the house. It's illegal to knock down a grave, but not illegal to allow it to decay naturally. Thus a cemetery in the back yard can devalue one's house somewhat.

I wouldn't want it right in the middle of the garden though...I'm sure that's not what that is in the photo Shock

SoCrimeaRiver · 19/01/2021 20:53

The details say part of the garden is rented from the council so presumably they had to bury him in a bit that he owned. I'd like to know where the rented garden starts so you can see where he is in relation.

DogInATent · 19/01/2021 20:57

You've never bought a house with a patio before?

WaitingOnTheDaffodils · 19/01/2021 21:04

My gran, grandpa, my aunt, her son and my mum and dad are buried on the hill behind our house, this was their house before it was ours. I often look out of the kitchen window and it gives me comfort to know they are buried so close. I always look at it that they are watching over us.

Presumably you aren’t walking over their graves when you put your washing out though?

That garden is way too small for a burial. And they have plonked him right in the middle, so no avoiding him.

MrDinklesOhSnap · 19/01/2021 21:34

It might feel weird at first, but at least you can be reassured that the previous owner is happily interred in his beloved garden and probably won’t come back to haunt you! It’s nice that the house has been so well-loved by someone.

LopsidedWombat · 20/01/2021 13:17

I didn't know you could be buried in your garden Shock

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 20/01/2021 13:25

I wouldn't mind this at all. So long as he wasn't in a place that I would ever need to dig up for work on the house.
When you think about it, you never really know if a person has died in your home if you live in an old house, so does it really matter if that person is in the garden?
The only problem I can see is if the new owner wants to resell, since people are funny about these things but presumably this is reflected in the price of the house.

Flaunch · 20/01/2021 13:29

It wouldn’t bother me if it was a big garden. If I was buying a house with a garden that small I’d wouldn’t want bodies buried in it, especially if they were planted in the middle of the lawn Confused

LonelyBlueBauble · 20/01/2021 14:00

It states that part of the garden is rented from the council so I assume the reason he appears to be buried where he is is because it is in the garden which is part of the house. Not the council owned part.

Do you think the family want to be able to visit the grave? Would that be written into the sale documents?
