Ex LA house - limit on pets?!

I recently bought a lovely house which is ex Local Authority. I'm in Scotland. When I was sent the paperwork from my solicitor I noticed a paragraph declaring that we are only allowed 1 cat and dog, or two of both. No chickens or aviary which I would have suspected might need permission anyway but no hutches either! So it looks like no bunnies or guinea pigs. Wasn't intending on getting those but I'm very surprised at that. Nor am I intending on having a menagerie either but we will get a pet or two at some point.

Anyway I've never seen or heard of these rules before. I don't recall seeing it when I bought my old flat years ago. Is it a LA thing? Anyone else experienced this? Previous owners of the house had two small dogs.

I used to live in a Victorian house that had lots of covenants about business use eg no market gardens, boarding houses, professional business only, no trade etc but it specifically allowed the property to be turned into a public house, which seemed at odds with all the other restrictions. It seems that there was a feud between the land owner and the neighbouring land owner, who did not allow the alcohol to be sold on their estate Grin.

I believe the feud was about railways. The first landowner refused to sell land to the railway company so the teetotal landowner sold their land on the border instead... right next to the first landowner's house.

Our house which is relatively new (around 15 years) has some sort of rule prohibiting us from changing the colour of our front door or removing the disease ridden hedge.
Our NDN was very put out when the door went from a faded bottle green to a pale blue and the cat encouraging hedge was pulled out.
They even brought the relevant piece of paper round.
Sandra must have been fizzing with anger when several neighbours did the same

I used to have a two bed flat on the 2nd floor of a new build block. It said I couldn’t have a dog, cat, goat, fowl or equine animal.

I was gutted because I really wanted to bring my goat with me to live on the balcony Grin we weren’t allowed to put washing out there either

A friend of mine had a posh new city apartment that said no children (under 14 I think)! I was sure he was wrong as it must be discriminatory to ban children but he swore that it was true! Can you imagine some covenant owner kicking out pregnant women? Shock Never going to happen..

SparkyTheCat · 23/01/2021 23:22

No issue with pets here, but apparently we're not allowed to operate a tannery 🤷‍♀️

Bollss · 23/01/2021 23:24

We are not ex LA but we are not permitted to keep any poultry. No idea why! Noise perhaps? Nothing about any other animals.

WTF0ver · 24/01/2021 23:25

No kids under 14! That's something else! :o These responses are eye opening!

That was meant to be the Shock emoji.

Old covenants are usually worthless. Probably set up by the landowner who sold the ground for development into housing.

I used to have a house where I was not allowed to have a funfair or a pub. My current house forbids me to change the colour of the windows (but does not say what colour they should be).

The original landowner is long dead and nobody else gives a fig. The deeds do not even say who has the right to enforce these covenants.

One of my ancestors donated land in Leeds for a bowling green, and I occasionally wonder if I have any rights over it. Probably not.

lazyakita · 25/01/2021 08:31

Our house has a covenant that says we can't keep pigeons.

ExConstance · 25/01/2021 13:13

Our group of 6 relatively new builds have covenants prohibiting chickens , and also TV aeriels. there are now 2 chicken keepers in the houses and we all have aeriels. If it is covenants so long as everyone is happy ( and we have lovely neighbour in all the houses) then it is not a big problem for you if you don't comply.

CottonSock · 25/01/2021 13:18

I doubt they will come after you for a bunny. Chickens are noisy though, they always wake me at my sisters house. Girls not cockerels

LeroyJenkinssss · 25/01/2021 13:26

@WorkingItOutAsIGo my last we too were explicitly allowed a pig! I’m amazed as the yard was tiny but it was an incredibly old terrace. I was always tempted...
