Glasgow areas

Very tentatively looking at a potential relocation - waiting on a promotion that would involve relocating to Glasgow.

I’m from the deepest darkest highlands and now live on the wrong side of the border in the north of england, I’ve loved every time I’ve been to Glasgow many times but for nights out/seeing friends at uni/weddings and the such, not actually living.

I was wondering what areas are worth considering?
If I kept my house in England and rented it out my Scotland budget would be about 150k, if I sold the england house about 300k.
I know Glasgow isn’t cheap but would consider commuting for up to an hour each way, however if that was the case would want to be somewhere vaguely rural and not suburban.

No need for schools, would like two bedrooms.
Where do I start?!

South Lanarkshire like Strathaven if you want rural. It’s about an hour to Glasgow by car.

Except none of your English friends will ever manage to visit you because they’ll be asking for directions to Strat-Haven or Strath-uvahn SadGrin. But at least you’re not in Milngavie or Cullzean, eh.

I used to live in a little South Lan town called Biggar, which was an easy drive into Glasgow once you’re on the M74. My SIL lives in Symington in Ayrshire, which is lovely, as are a lot of the little villages out that way. I have friends who live in Lanark which also has a lot going for it. £150k wouldn’t get you terribly far, even rurally, if you want nicer towns and villages, although if you hunted around you might manage it. £300k would give you a lot more choice.

I guess it depends which side of Glasgow you are commuting too - but an hours commute could get you out into Stirlingshire easily (Stirling, Bridge of Allan, Dunblane) - all on the trainline so 25 - 40 minute commute (depending on whether you get the fast train). If you are happy splitting the commute (so driving to a station for say 15 / 20 minutes) this would give you plenty of scope for rural areas - Braco, Doune, Gargunnock and Kippen both lovely villages. If you're happy just driving you could look at areas around Aberfoyle? I've moved out from Stirling to Comrie but lucky that I will only need to commute to Glasgow two days a week once covid is over so that PITA drive is worth it for a really rural village and easy access to the hills. Again 300k would give you a lot more choice in these areas (especially if you went for Stirling, Bridge of Allan and Dunblane - cost of being on the trainline).

Would suggest you also post on Scotsnet . With regards commuting do consider what roads will be like in winter. Friend lived in Lanark which was nice but I hated visiting as the road between Lanark and M74 was awful ( IMO).
Being a Southsider I can recommend Shawlands and around Muirend/Clarkston - decent train links to City Centre

Uddingston is nice, 15 mins to Glasgow on the train. Less than an hour to Edinburgh also

I'd go for milgavie personally, if I could! Lovely town centre, train station, and easy to head out north towards the trossachs from there. Plus a nice range of house styles.
