How to increase privacy in garden

I am buying a house which has a low wall between next doors garden meaning no privacy. I know when I move in I will need to tread carefully as I don’t want to annoy neighbours straight away. But what are my options? Fence on my side?

Whose wall is it? If it was my wall , and a nice one , I would think about having something on top of it rather than in front. Look at the “screen with envy “ stuff.

If it’s their wall then all you can do is put a fence in front of it. Tell them you have children, or are thinking of getting a dog. Or be truthful, say you want privacy.

A low wall is unusual though, check your deeds in case there is a clause about boundary heights.

I will do, thank you. The other side of garden has a high fence so I don't think it can be in the deeds but I will definitely check . The dog idea of a good one!

A very tall fence! I'm a bit fan of tall fences. Your neighbour might not like it but you do as you see fit. From my experience neighbours just do what the hell they like ...

Pleached trees?

What about bamboo? Grows very fast and potentially very tall, but isn’t too severe.

I'm a fan of fast growing hedges. Buy plants which are 120cms+ and they will grow quickly. Griselinia and privet are best imho and very controllable.

Don't plant a spreading bamboo! Your neighbours will definitely hate you.

A high fence isn't necessarily a good thing. Unless you like living in a box.
Have a mid-height fence and then something less substantial above - a wispy tree or a trellis that lets light through, gives a glimpse of what is beyond.
