Cheapest heater to run

Any advice on heating one room?
My tight-wad husband sits in the warmest room in the house, a study with only a small outdoor wall. It is gloriously warm in there. My daughter and I sit in the dining room, which is badly insulated, has walls on three sides and one teeny tiny radiator.
There is a full battle raging over control of the central heating switch.
I found an old fan heater, but I do know that’s not exactly practical, and it also scares me as the plug gets really hot.
What’s the cheapest / safest option? An portable oil filled radiator? One of those awful wheelie gas things with an orange front? (Please don’t say this). I did have a halogen heater at one point in the past, but the dog knocked it and set fire to the coffee table. Oops.

So cheap, safe, portable, child and dog proof ideas please! Room is only about 15’x10’.
Thank you.

My friend is on a very low income and swears by the electric convector heaters, I think they are 20p per hour to run.

I’d be moving into my own house and controlling m own CH in your situation.

The cheapest option here is to sit in the warm room.

JeansNTees · 16/01/2021 12:42

Heated throws. Instead of heating the entire room's air, they heat you. But yes, switch rooms with the person who won't let you crank up the heat.

Elouera · 16/01/2021 12:46

Do you have thick, insulated curtains on the windows and doors in that room?
Cost will greatly depend on what you pay for electric and gas?
Storage heaters are the most economical, but for a portable, sale option, I'd say a oil heater. We have one on wheels, and it turns off when it reaches the set temperature. Hot enough to heat the room, but not dangerous to touch.

Elouera · 16/01/2021 12:46

Also, is you DH working in the other room? Is your room insulated?

Northernsoullover · 16/01/2021 12:48

Its probably cheaper to turn on the central heating and turn off the ones that aren't being used than run an electric heater.

anniegun · 16/01/2021 12:49

Oil filled radiators are pretty good for single rooms. All electric options are the same price per KWh

walksen · 16/01/2021 12:49

Why not Fit a bigger radiator in the dining room and fit with a trv. Probably the cheapest way to heat the room

Janek · 16/01/2021 12:51

Or turn the radiator off in the study and then switch the heating on and he'll never know.

Riapia · 16/01/2021 12:58

You ABU, nobody on MN has their heating on yet. 😁😁😁

Thanks all. Can’t switch rooms, the study is too small for two of us and my husband has to work on three monitors that are fixed to the wall. It is a tiny room, with a huge radiator, which is really odd. Usually the dining room being colder isn’t a problem, but it will be for the next month or so (please no longer!) that my daughter and I are homeschooling and working from there. My husband is in shirt-sleeves, windows flung open, just as we are starting to thaw.
I’ll investigate your suggestions, thank you.

Oh, and I’ve tried to turn that radiator off, but no matter what I do, it’s still roasting hot. The valve might be chalked up, I suppose.

Get a portable thermometer. Check the temp in the Dining room and then turn his radiator off until it drops to same temp as the dining room. Then have a discussion Re what is a suitable temp for both rooms.

We have a portable oiled filled radiator. Fairly cheap to run, has a built in thermostat and holds heat well when switched off.

the radiator in his room needs fixing - it is ridiculous that he is heating the outdoors. A new TRV isn't expensive, and for this situation it would be worth getting someone to install it if you can't.

all electric heaters have the same efficiency and cost the same per kw to run. The 'orange thing' you are thinking of is a Calor gas heater, will make the room damp. The dog needs to be kept out of the room.
