Papering a ceiling with Anaglypta

Hi has anyone got experience of doing this. Some of our ceilings are in pretty poor condition and a few have been papered previously with what looks like 60s/70s style paper. I'm loathe to have them skimmed and to be honest I'm not sure that it would be possible as they've been papered already.
Any experience and advice would be greatly appreciated x

Don’t use anaglypta, you can buy thick lining paper, 1 m wide that has a paintable side.
It’s smooth and goes on well.

Thank you for this information. I'll look out for it x

My dad was a decorator and all our ceilings had anaglypta and looked classy in their 30s house. I have shit ceilings and mine have textured blown vinyl in a teeny tiny print to hide the unevenness and when put up professionally with coving they look really good.

Have your ceilings skimmed - its a much better option. Anaglypta is quite old fashioned now, and was used precisely for the reason you're contemplating - that it covers uneven wall/ceilings etc. My parents have it, it was all over the house we grew up in, was everywhere in our current house when we bought it. If I was buying a house with it, I'd be factoring in the cost of removing it and skimming.

That's the problem as I think removing it would be a nightmare!

Not sure I understand then - do you mean you want to use anaglypta over existing anaglypta?

Veuvestar · 16/01/2021 11:39

You’d have to take the paper off, back to the plaster and then either hope the plaster is ok or get them skimmed
Taking it off isn’t that bad, not much worse than regular paper, is that what you mean?

I have mostly papered ceilings and I like them. Easy to give a coat of emulsion to every couple of years to keep fresh and look good finished off with coving.
In one room where I wanted to get rid of the anaglypta I just paster boarded over it and had it skimmed.
I think anaglypta is vastly under rated and some of the designs are lovely. I am sick of plain plastered walls painted in shades of grey and am going to repaper my hall stairs and landing in paintable anaglypta..
