Wooden floor in bathroom?

Purely hypothetical at the moment... but I'm starting the mental gymnastics for redoing our bathroom.

Tiling feels like it will be really expensive. Under the carpet we have in there at the moment (Envy not envy) there are boards - they could do with a sand and there's one that would need to be replaced, but other than that they're lovely. The only thing is, they're pretty gappy in places.

Do wooden bathroom floors NEED to be cranked together? Or can we get away with varnish?

Got original old floorboards in my bathroom. Sanded them and used a few coats of Ronseal floor wax. I think they look lovely. They’re gappy in places but I call it ‘character’ Smile. Depends on your taste obvs.

(I think I should’ve used varnish as I’ve got to re-do the wax every year/18 months.)

nothing wrong with them, but if you slosh water out of the bath by jumping in, it will run through the gaps before you have time to towel it up.

Current bathroom has a varnished hardwood floor; previous house had original old floorboads with 4mm ply to give a flat surface, and looselay vinyl over that. It's good to be able to lift bathroom flooring easily to dry out leaks and spillages.

So not really suitable for my 200yr old house with the dodgy wiring in unpredictable places, and my toddler daughter who likes to splash, then...

I think the gaps can be filled with slivers of wood called 'fillets'

We have quickstep hydro in our bathroom, it has to be the hydro versions for bathrooms but I bought it from ebay and laid it myself - it’s the thick plank version and I really like it. Probably not as nice as wooden floors but for a bathroom it’s very practical.
