Kitchen dilemma (cookers)

Getting my kitchen ripped out and spending my lockdown hours contemplating what to do about the cooker.

We inherited a Falcon which does the job (grill is broken and it’s a gas hob which is great to cook on but not to clean).

I’ve been hankering after a new shiny range but to be honest I never realised how expensive Falcon are, and how much regard they have (I’ve read a lot of threads on Mumsnet about this .. thank you ladies Star).

So my options now are:

  1. Buy my new shiny range with an induction hob and teach my husband how to fry a steak on it (this is his only requirement)
  2. Keep my Falcon and get it cleaned, fixed and serviced and just suck up the gas hob cleaning
  3. Curveball and get a built in Neff (or equivalent) and a dual gas/ induction job (in the name of marital compromise)

Maybe not much help but I got a Stoves range (110cm) and find it excellent in all respects! Cannot personally stand induction hobs

Have you had a quote to fix the Falcon? That would be my first move I think, is a colour you like? Will it fit with your nee kitchen? How old is it? Is it likely to go wrong again?
You could always sell it second hand and buy something you like more maybe

I had the same dilemma with my dual fuel Britannia range. It's quite long in the tooth but basically in good working order. Built like a tank.

I would like an induction range but I can't really afford a Britannia one at the moment so I'd need to buy a cheaper brand. I have compromised with having mine professionally cleaned.

I love induction. It's so much cheaper to use, heats up quickly, spreads the heat more effectively and is far easier to keep clean.

oops, I had mine professionally cleaned and serviced (missed the most important bit!)

Get an engineer out to see if the Falcon can be mended: that has got to be your first action. If it can be mended, you can then either decide to keep it or sell it second hand.

If it can be fixed, could you fit in a standalone induction hob somewhere into your new kitchen? Your husband can then keep his gas hob for his steaks, and you have the induction for everyday use (and the gas for a back up at Christmas etc).

For what it's worth, we have an induction only and they are fantastic for steaks (and everything else except for wok cooking of course).

Thanks all .. it’s a black one and I think this, along with the gas hob, is what’s not making me live it. I’m going for a very Scandinavian simple no nonsense kitchen (I have the fussiest kitchen ever with tongue and groove, pillars, shaker doors, the works and it is horrendous to keep clean) .. I’m really, really in love with the coloured ranges to add that splash of wow.

I have the budget .. my dad is paying for the kitchen as part of an early inheritance so the money I was saving can be spent on a new range. I ended up at the Lacanche website this morning and was utterly in love ... then I read done shit reviews and back to square one!

I will definitely sell it if I get a new one do a service/ repair/ clean is inevitable anyway .. I think that will be my first job regardless.
