Fence painting!

So - anticipating that at some point, one of the big retailers may do a 3 for 2 or maybe a % off paints, so I want to be prepared and know in advance what fence paint I would like.

Fences have been up a couple of years - never stained or painted. Wanting to paint rather than stain as would like them to remain a light colour. I've always had a dark stain on the fences but actually I quite like the paler new wood as it makes the garden feel brighter on a dull day.

I'm thinking a greige or taupe sort of colour - does anyone have any recommendations for brands please, and maybe some pics too?

Also - fence sprayer or brush? I have a biggish garden and obviously will take a few coats with it never being painted before, but not sure if sprayers are all that jazz?

Thanks!

I have used Farrow and Ball Exterior paint for wood. I have used a dark colour though but its very long lasting. It needs good prep with primer, undercoat and then top coat but its easy to apply.

Paint sits on wood, stain sinks in. Stain wears better in my experience and is just reapplied without needing to remove old flaky stuff.

I use www.protekwoodstain.co.uk/safe-natural/shed-fence-paint but may not have the colours you want.

I use a brush because I like my neighbours. Spraying paint on the boundary seems anti-social to me.

Surely you're not painting your fence at this time of the year?Shock

That's definitely a spring/summer garden job.

Thanks all!

And no, @CremeEggThief just being ready so if there's a sale I can buy it ready rather than making a rash decision when (if ever!) I have a dry, child free weekend!

@Rollercoaster1920 we have a solid feather edge fence with a field at the back and one side so only got one neighbour to consider (the field owner is happy for me go into the field to paint the other side so I will have quite a lot to do!) Do you think it would go under/through the fence to our neighbours? I could always touch the top/bottom up with a brush?

Spraying is a good way to fall out with your neighbour when they have permanent paint splatter on their brickwork, window frames, windows, patio, plants, furniture...

Paint will go over the top, be picked up by wind, and go through any gaps.

Just use a brush.

If you don't believe me there have been multiple threads where people have found paint splatter on their property or had angry/upset neighbours.

Thank goodness for that, OP. Phew!Grin
