Are Scarborough & Bridlington nice places to live?

Hello,
I am looking to move to a seaside town, preferably where there are woodland walks within the area or a couple miles away. We are open to where we go, and have preference to quieter areas than in a town centre, but we can compromise for the right area.
We currently live in Leeds wondered what Scarborough & Bridlington were like to live rather than as a day trip. The property prices seem reasonable and ideally we need a 4 bed home. The downside is we don't have a huge budget (max £135k).
I'm a single mom to a 7yr old boy and my mum will also be coming who has early onset dementia; so I need areas that are nice. I'm worried that when she gets worse and she went walkabout without me, I want to know that she'd be relatively safe.
Are there any there any areas to avoid?
Thanks in advance 😊

I don't live there but know them pretty well. You have to ask yourself why a lot of employers struggle to get people to move there to work.

Areas outside of the towns can be nice but it depends what you want. The two towns are not near places compared to leeds. They are also fairly deprived places to live.

Why do you want to move there? What is the attraction and that might help people comment

I would say not really, OK to visit for a day (Scarborough is better than Brid) but not somewhere you would want to live.

Flamborough near Brid is a lovely village beautiful cliff top walks and not far from Danes Dyke which is wooded area. It has an old lighthouse and caves to explore at North Landing, reminds me of Cornwall. I live in West Yorks and it’s my go-to for a weekend break.
House prices but dearer than nearby Brid but still reasonable. Some of Brid seems a bit lost, but they do have a newish leisure center and The Spa for live entertainment.
Scarborough probably does have more going for it overall, but if I had the choice I’d move to Flamborough.

My ILs moved to Scarborough from the Manchester suburbs about ten years ago. They live in a 4-bed house in a village about a 10-minute drive inland and have been very happy so far. They do a lot of stuff to get involved with the local community (running, yoga, creative writing), and go for lots of walks along the north and south bays. They love the rural views they have, and enjoy most aspects of being somewhere fairly remote. Have you checked what you can get for your budget in the area?

Filey is much nicer, also Flamborough. Scarborough and Brid are ok for a day out but are quite deprived.

Seaside towns are usually terrible for employment (and drugs tbh)

ShellsandSand · 12/01/2021 21:56

I moved from Brid seven years ago. Some areas are nice but mainly for retired people. PP was absolutely correct about lack of employment and drug users. For the younger person it can be a depressing town. No retail aside from charity shops and cash converter types places. DH was born there (I was born in Leeds) and I can only get him back to Brid to visit our parents like once a year. He loathes it. It can have that effect on you after some years. Scarb not much better really. Better selection of shops and services but probably worse for drug culture.

I know both fairly well and think Bridlington is nicer. There's as village/suburb called Sewerby at the northern edge of Bridlington which I think would be a nice place to live.

Filey is lovely.

I live in Scarborough. I wouldn't recommend it. There's not much work and what there is is poorly paid. Public transport is all but non-existent. Not much to do unless you have a reasonably robust budget or you're an outdoorsy type. Town centre has fewer and fewer shops and is increasingly boarded up. Swamped with people in the summer and most attractions aimed for tourists. Lots of deprivation, anti-social behaviour and a big drugs problem. Local hospital is being run down.
But there are some very pretty areas, the sea is nice, it's infinitely better in the winter than the summer and property can be reasonably priced.

Crikey! I live in Scarborough and it’s lovely. Every day I count my blessings. I’ve lived in York and Harrogate and other naice places but genuinely dont recognise the downtrodden slums that people are describing on this thread. Plus all my family have great careers, own homes, contribute to the community and stuff and the kids look back on their childhoods spent at the beach chalet, fondly. Tbf though, you might struggle with your budget to get what you want in a nice area.

Chutneymaura · 12/01/2021 22:14

Haha @gildalilly two sides to same coin there then 🤣

CoronaIsWatching · 12/01/2021 22:22

I like Scarborough though only been on day trips. Has a train station, decent theatre (if it re-opens after Covid) a couple of nice long beaches, nice walks to be had along the cliff tops. Property cheap.

I reckon places like Scarborough will become more popular in the coming years as more people working from home on a full time basis and they want to be on the coast

Phlicker · 12/01/2021 22:27

@Chutneymaura I grew up in Scarborough, lived on the beach in summer and have fond memories of the family chalet. It was only recently I visited Filey and fell in love with it.

gildalilly · 12/01/2021 22:28

@Chutneymaura, maybe I'm just being a curmudgeon! I have teenagers so that colours my point of view in terms of there not being lots of opportunity for them. I am also from a larger city so find it all a bit dull and lacking in hope and vision. Maybe it's me! Ask me again in the morning Smile

Piggymoo · 13/01/2021 02:04

OK, thank you.

This was what I thought too. I know Scarborough Council have applied for a £25million grant to improve the town. Also they won awards for their beaches, so like you I wonder whether property and interest in the area may increase.......🤔

so relieved I read your comment I love Scarborough and we may be moving there in Sept! I am not expecting perfection but I love the outdoors and being close to sea/sand and the beautiful Peasholm park is something I really look forward to.

Sunflowergirl1 · 06/08/2025 10:20

It is very detached from main places and shopping etc. This is why many employers struggle to recruit skilled staff. The NHS, police etc all run specific east coast recruitment simply because of this. If that is ok then go for it
