Paying a builder in cash

Hi
Quick question - if paying cash, do you physically count out the cash in front of the workman? I have to pay £1100 today and I dont want to stand there looking like a plonker counting out every note, but nor do I want him to take the wad and miscount it.

What do you do if you have to pay cash?
Thanks

@themummyway Oh no, which builder was this? Perhaps they're trying to scam you by charging VAT despite not being VAT registered? You can check this yourself.

@smallgoon - hi old friend! So much has happened since my last message to you... complete rollercoaster.

This is builder who left job partway through. They're definitely VAT registered and from what I can see, they have been for at least a year...

@themummyway So it seems as though they said if you paid cash, they wouldn't charge VAT (do you have this in writing anywhere, text/whatsapp), but are now charging VAT (presumably because they're now pissed off at you for switching builders)?

Of course not because it's illegal for them to do that - not my issue as they're the ones that need to pay tax not me. That being said, it doesn't help my case at all...

Will DM ya the full details!
