Oxford area

We are looking at moving, really interested in Oxford but know nothing about the areas at all.
We have 2 Teens, 1 still in education.

Which are the nice areas, not to rural or quiet and near a shopping centre, places to go out etc, we live quite rural at the moment and it's not really for us at this stage in our lives, to quiet and not much life for the teens.

Looking for a nice, friendly, not to quiet area.

Thank you.

Summertown is lovely depending on your budget. Lots of independent stores, coffee shops etc and green areas but close to the city centre by bus if needed. Very pricey though!

MorningTeas · 15/01/2021 09:05

Thank you @Loushome I will have a look at sunmertown I haven't heard of it.

Summertown, Botley, Boars Hill are all nice.

East Oxford (Cowley road area) is a bit more ruff and ready but still lots of nice side streets, plenty of bars and places to eat.

Depends on your budget really; Oxford is very expensive. Do you want to live inside the ring rd or not? Do you need a school place and are there any available etc?
Summertown, Headington, Cumnor Hill are all lovely, inside the ring rd and v v pricey, As is Jericho.
If you are happy to consider outside the ring rd that will provide more options. Most nearby villages have direct city buses to town quite frequently

DietrichandDiMaggio · 15/01/2021 19:26

Totally depends on your budget. You'll probably need £800,000 minimum to get a 3/4 bedroom house in Summertown or Jericho. They are both in catchment for the best state secondary school which is the Cherwell School.
If you give an idea of how much you can spend, then people can give better advice on where you should look, rather than just the most desirable areas.

Headington is nice, and not as expensive as the likes of Jericho, Summertown, etc. in north Oxford. The Old Headington area is like a country village, but you still have shops inc. Waitrose, and buses more or less on the doorstep. There is a park (Bury Knowle) right there, and the lovely C S Lewis Nature Reserve quite close by.

MorningTeas · 21/01/2021 14:05

Thank you for the suggestions.
Our budget is tops £850.000.
We were looking more towards south Oxford, is anywhere round there nice? Don't need to be in a city centre but being around 15-20 minutes away would be good.

Once lockdown is over, we are going to go have a visit and stay for a weekend.

I can recommend Iffley Fields. It’s v friendly, easy walk into town (less than a mile), easy access to river walks, parks and the hubbub of Cowley Rd. Mainly terraced housing and it’s a bugger to park so depends on your priorities.

Summertown and Jericho are lovely but pricey as already mentioned. Iffley village is also really nice, chocolate box with a village shop and pub.

Wauden · 04/12/2021 23:58

Just be aware that the centre is often packed with tourists and the areas around the city will be developed for housing.

I lived in Grandpont for a bit - its the area just south of the river to the west of Abingdon Road. Housing stock is mainly storey Victorian terraces but they are a good size - the house I was in had 4 doubles and a single with a reasonable garden. It took 10 minutes to walk to Carfax.

TizerorFizz · 05/12/2021 09:21

Iffley, Crowley or Headington are worth looking at. A bit further out, Kennington.

Rainbowshine · 05/12/2021 10:10

I would look at Headington Quarry area, in that price range and with the type of “busyness you want. Nice halfway quiet but close to shops, main roads into the centre and with teens not far off schools and bus routes.
