Help dressing tall narrow window - swag?

I have two of these windows. They don’t need curtains or blinds for privacy reasons. We’ve lived with them without any window dressings for a while but I think they need some softening. To the right is a long wall with bifold doors with the same anthracite aluminium frames that it would be too tricky to put any fabric window dressing on.
Does anyone have any ideas what we could do? A sort of swag/window scarf thing? Or a faux Roman blind? I have basic sewing skills. I think a pole with 2 normal curtains might look weird as it’s so tall and thin. Don’t want to lose too much light.
I was wondering about putting two nobbins/curtain hold backs at each top corner and draping some fabric up over and down, would that work?

Put a tall plant or ornament in front of it.

Kind of like this....
Sorry for the crap diagram 😂

I really dislike swags on windows as I think they look fussy ...my mam would have called them 'clarty'. Would be a shame to block out any of the garden so why not, if you are determined to soften the window, put a little shelf above it and bung some choice decorative objects on it,or a small trailing plant?

RuggeryBuggery · 10/01/2021 12:57

I still like seeing out of it @ILoveShula
Does not look like it from the angle I took the photo but actually has a nice view of the garden/flower bed from the table and kitchen sofa.

or put a series of glass shelves in the bottom alcove for plants, nice stuff

RuggeryBuggery · 10/01/2021 12:59

Ah ok. Maybe it doesn’t look too hard and bare, might be to do with taking down the Christmas tree from that corner. Or might be because you can’t see the rest of the room

like this

ILoveShula · 10/01/2021 13:07

I don't think it looks hard and bare and my first thought was 'Have you just taken down the decorations?'.

I suggested something because what I saw through it was the manhole cover. Smile

RuggeryBuggery · 10/01/2021 13:12

Er... yes correct there is a not very attractive man hole cover right there that’s true 😂
Plan is at some point to put in some planting next to the house there

Interesting about the glass shelves, thank you
Tho don’t want to detract too much from outside (apart from the man hole cover, and the gravel and the washing line...) 😂

Personally I would avoid swags as they are really old fashioned , would look much nicer with a plant beside it or perhaps a floor lamp even a floor cushion to sit on and read on, but remember it is down to you and your taste as it's your house and you will be the one looking at it
The manhole cover can be covered by a planter easy enough

ILoveShula · 10/01/2021 13:26

You're lucky to have such a nice view. I was just being picky.
Put a nice plant outside. Something that has flowers in the spring and berries in the autumn perhaps.

Got window and garden envy now. [green]

ILoveShula · 10/01/2021 13:26

Envy even. Smile

SecondHandChandelier · 10/01/2021 13:51

Ornamental grasses outside perhaps?

RuggeryBuggery · 10/01/2021 15:30

Thanks everyone! You’ve spurred me on to sort out the outside area, had kind of stopped noticing it. Had thought it needed some fabric/softness inside but maybe it’s partly also down to all the bare trees and stuff outside at the moment. It’s quite a bit dining section of the kitchen diner, hard floors, hard furniture apart from one sofa with a couple of cushions. Quite a high vaulted ceiling. Can be slightly echoey acoustically

These windows are not designed to have any soft furnishings attached and it would be a mistake to do it. Improve the view to the outside and think about how to furnish the inside. Look at Houzz and barn conversions for inspiration. You need to think about rugs and upholstered settees/chairs. These take out the echos associated with hard floors.

I would never add shelves either. Opaque glass on the lower half might be an option but I love full length windows!

Looking at the manhole looks a bit crap , can you plant something between the window and manhole to hide it and also create a bit of colour ( with the right plants ) .
