When you get someone in to hang doors..

Inexperienced home maker here so please bear with me. Local carpenter (not used before) is supplying (Howdens) doors and hanging them for us, along with a couple of other small jobs. Total cost approx £1500, he has asked for £1000 as a deposit which he will order the doors with. When I read online about deposits it all says 20% is about average, obviously this is way above it but to me it makes sense that we'd have to pay for the materials up front, I think!?

Howdens you have an account so I don't think you pay at point of purchase?

NHSEA · 09/01/2021 17:16

How many doors are you having fitted, and what style?

lostfrequencies · 09/01/2021 17:26

@NHSEA I've sent you a PM

I think if it is the case that the doors may take a long time to be delivered because of covid it would be fair enough for you to pay for them upfront (as otherwise the carpenter will be out of pocket for a while), but I would want to pay for them myself on a credit card. Otherwise, I would be wary.

How did you get the carpenter? Was it via personal recommendation or one of the checkatrade type sites?

PP is right about having an account at Howdens.

VenusClapTrap · 09/01/2021 17:38

I wouldn’t pay that much deposit.

sbplanet · 09/01/2021 17:43

I wouldn't pay a deposit at all. He won't pay for the doors as he has an account.

I bought doors from B&Q along with handles and hinges had them delivered and paid for them myself then carpenter came and fitted them once delivered and invoiced me for the fitting. I could choose from about 14.
