one room, two ceiling colours?!

Hi,

Does this idea have potential or is this madness?

We're having our kitchen and dining room knocked through to a kitchen-diner. A (an?!) RSJ will be in the ceiling which kind of divides the two rooms. The kitchen cabinets will be an olive green.

What about painting the dining room ceiling (stopping at the RSJ) the same olive grene of the cabinets, to zone it and define the dining room and "cozy it up". The rest of the walls would be pale. This picture isn't the right green but shows what a dark green could look like on a dining room ceiling, but what if it was right next to a kitchen area with a white ceiling?

Thanks for any thoughts.

I like the concept, but not the colour. It's too oppressive and brings the ceiling down.

I think it could work really well but I would go the whole hog and paint the walls a dark colour too so you have a dark and light zone - more broken plan style with distinct zones than open plan. Although it depends a bit on how dark the olive green cupboards make the kitchen look, you could end up with the whole thing looking dark and dingy. It also depends on whether you use your dining more during the day or after dark. You might want a light and airy feel if your family spends hours playing, crafting or doing homework or work at the table during the day. If you spend more time relaxing or entertaining in the evening, cosy and dark is great.

If you can afford it, paint is the cheapest thing to change so you could always repaint if it looks terrible. I think Valspar offer a refund it if you don't like a colour and repaint in another Valspar paint Smile I've no idea if their paint is any good though.

This is sitting room/kitchen but it gives an idea of what a strong contrast looks like.

I love olive and think it sounds fabulous, and as @orangenasturtium says, you can always repaint if you don't like it. Similar idea here on Instagram, though that's with a lighter green and directly above the kitchen cabinets. I'd be v tempted to do something similar myself if we had higher ceilings in the kitchen.

Out of interest which olive green are you having on your cabinets?

PragmaticWench · 09/01/2021 16:17

I think it's fantastic!!

I'm eyeing up our ceiling now and wondering if it's too low.

Lottle · 09/01/2021 18:32

Well this has been a very positive response! Thanks guys. Maybe I'm not just going lockdown loco!

@Zinnia I think it will need to be a bespoke colour for the cabinets. Magnet do "green olives" colour but they are quite pricy. Not many others seem to. I do like Farrow and Ball 'bancha' though I've only seen it online.

I've been eyeing up Bancha too, though fear it may be a shade too yellow for my space. We'll see. There are some good Little Greene colours too - I've got my eye on Hopper; there's a stunning colour called Jewel Beetle which is quite yellow, also an Olive which may be a bit dark.

Naked Kitchens do a lovely olive green called Samphire, may be worth checking out.

@Zinnia
Just ordered a Little Greene colour card!

I’ve just done similar.

I wanted the dining room to be cosy and dark . Our kitchen is light, apart from the island which was colour matched to the paint in the dining room (Craig and Rose Zeitgeist).

I took the dark paint up and over the entire dining space and it really does work. When you take the same dark colour over the entire room you lose corners, so it doesn’t necessarily make it feel too small either.

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 12/01/2021 09:50

Having said that ceilings being a different colour to the rest of the room (especially a colour) seems to be a thing right now.

I’m also about to paint my bedroom black with a light teal grey ceiling. Bit like the picture attached.

I think your would look great too.

I like the idea and the colours

@Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree didn't know it was a 'thing'! I've never liked on trend stuff before. I feel so funky!

Does your dining room not feel very dark with all the walls and ceiling the dark colour? You're very brave. I'm not sure I feel so courageous!
