Are vertical column radiators as effective as standard ones?

If they're the same surface area, will it heat the space as effectively? The current normal radiator is about 60cm high and 100cm wide. If I got one that is 40cm wide by 150cm tall will it heat the space as effectively? (I'd like to move it to the opposite wall which is smaller due to doorways)

I'm a bit concerned that more of the heat would go straight up rather than heating the body of the room. (The current radiator works well in the room - its a hallway if that matters - but quite a wide one)

You need to look at the BTU rating (that's as far as my knowledge goes).
But I've got tall column ones in my lounge, playroom and kitchen and they keep everywhere really warm.
And if I'm cold I can stand against one and it warms my whole body 😁

I wondered the same thing when I had a kitchen planned that relied on a vertical radiator. It turns out it is actually much more efficient than the old horizontal one and it really belts out heat. It's also lovely to stand with your back against when you come in out of the cold.

Have a look at the way radiators work. The heat rises rather than wafting outwards into the room, so it shouldn’t make any difference

This kind of thing

We have a tall skinny one and a ‘normal’ shaped one and they both seem much hotter than more modern radiators. Our tall one is in the bathroom covered in towels and the room is always boiling 🤷🏻‍♀️

This ^ It’s all down to the BTU output.....I’ve got both vertical and horizontal throughout my house . I always go for the 3 column ones as I prefer a radiator to be a bit fatter but narrower width.

A long low one will heat the room more evenly, and a shelf above it will interrupt the airflow and help.

Narrow, tall radiators are especially good at heating the ceiling, which is only an advantage if you are a spider.

We’ve got vertical ones and they’re brilliant; we don’t waste so much wall space and the house is roasting.
