White gloss turn yellow

Hi can someone help me please, I painted my wood with white gloss it looked great for about 8 days it turned yellow. No one smokes in the house, I’m fed up with the off yellow look it just looks awful. Is there anything I can do ? Any white gloss that doesn’t do this? I was thinking about just doing them normal matt white but it might look funny as I have these wierd wood bits between the roof and walls. The walls are blue with glitter added not sure if it makes any difference at all🤣

You need a water based paint. Oil bard goes yellow if not exposed to sunlight although in 8 days that seems very quick!

Try Satin Wood. It's easier to use and gives a nice finish.

Yep this happened to me...no one has ever smoked in our house. But yes, gloss can often discolour especially if it doesn't get enough sunlight. Such a pain and looks awful. I've started repainting mine with satinwood...much better.

No one tells you this stuff!

Another vote for satin wood, I always use it now when I get round to doing a room.

Brilliant thank you all so much. I really appreciate it. It’s the first time I’ve decorated by myself so thought I’ve probably done something wrong. Thank you 😊

Basically you need quick dry gloss as thatvwill be water based.
Non drip gloss isn't and will go yellow.

Although 8 days ia very very quick ao could be another reason. Are you painting over existing gloss? If existing gloss work iz yellow could take 3 or 4coats to cover and get it bright white

Imtoooldforallthis · 08/01/2021 20:30

Gloss paint does yellow but not in 8 days, was this painted over existing paintwork or wood, you may need a stain bock before using a waterbased gloss or satin.

InTheLongGrass · 08/01/2021 20:36

When you say painted the wood, was there already paint on there?
Oil based gloss does yellow, but over years, not days.
Water based gloss will stay whiter, but is easier to chip.

Buzlightyear1 · 08/01/2021 22:02

Hi yes there was already gloss on there that I painted over. So should I sand it right back and start from there with water based gloss

8 days is not normal.

Do you use candles, or have an open fire?

If not, I think something, like cigarette tar, must have been present on the surface already, and leached into your new paint.

It is probably too late to try and clean it now.

Try repainting a small area, but I think you may end up needing a stain blocker.

LooseMooseHoose · 08/01/2021 23:50

Yes, you should have sanded down the old gloss before painting it. That's one of the reasons glossing woodwork is the worst decorating job. (Apart from may be stripping woodchip...)

Anordinarymum · 08/01/2021 23:53

Was the paint new or did you already have it ? Paint should not be kept for long as it goes off

I use Frenchic paint in Dazzle Me - it's water based, so easy to use, Matt and gorgeous and stays white forever!
