Does this ruin my new kitchen?

We are moving into a new house, there was an integrated fridge freezer included that was too small for us, we already own an American fridge freezer we wanted to bring with us.

This isn't our kitchen, ours isn't finished yet but this is the same size and lay out. I have (badly) edited the kitchen like ours to show where our American fridge freezer is going and where the breakfast bar is being shortened to to allow extra room to pass by it.

It just looks a bit rubbish. I love how big open and bright the room looks in the first pic. I know we need to prioritise storage over looks but I'm worried it looks really bad and out of place. Does it?

Yes, sorry. Looks totally out of place. Where's the integrated fridge freezer, in the tall unit at the back? Is it possible to get a large fridge in the integrated unit and put a freezer elsewhere.

It's too late, really. Our kitchen is on site ready to be fitted and it doesn't include an integrated, where the integrated was has been turned into a cupboard and a shorter breakfast bar has been ordered. Hindsight is a wonderful thing Sad

Yes, sorry it doesn't look right

mammmamia · 06/01/2021 22:16

I think it’s fine, you will get used to it and it’s partly the perspective of the photo. If you were sitting at the breakfast table or were at the cooker or sink you wouldn’t think it looked out of place. Once you’re in and you’ve got all your stuff there it’ll look like it was meant to be there.

thewreckofthehesperus · 06/01/2021 22:16

It does look a bit clunky I'm afraid, is there room for a chest freezer in a utility room/shed for extra storage so you can stick with the integrated?

Solasum · 06/01/2021 22:17

Good idea @pinfloy the huge fridge there would make it look v cramped. Also doubt it would be possible to shorten the breakfast bar without at least some irreparable damage to the cabinet/floor/surface. Does the floor covering definitely run under that unit at all?

schmockdown · 06/01/2021 22:17

Yes I'm afraid so.

Flaunch · 06/01/2021 22:17

I couldn’t live with that, sorry. If it’s a company like screw fix they are very open to changing things as they hold so much stock.

KitchenLayoutHelp · 06/01/2021 22:17

Thanks for suggestions. It's too late unfortunately. Just gutted

It will be fine, function before form with a kitchen always. We have just redone our kitchen, is it beautiful? Not really. Is it very practical and suits our family? Yes totally. I am very pleased I have a kitchen that works for us it makes my life easier every day.

SwedishEdith · 06/01/2021 22:21

I know that's not your actual kitchen but have you enough space between end of breakfast bar and fridge to a) pass through easily and b) open fridge completely without blocking that space?

KihoBebiluPute · 06/01/2021 22:21

I would shorten the spur/breakfast bar by another 60cm as that gap is way too narrow

HardAsSnails · 06/01/2021 22:21

If you don't have the breakfast bar the fridge will be fine where you've planned it. Is it too late to ask your fitters to re-jig things?

KihoBebiluPute · 06/01/2021 22:22

It's not too late to make changes.

Imohsotired · 06/01/2021 22:22

I think it still looks good if you get a fridge with a nice finish.

Blackdog19 · 06/01/2021 22:23

It will be absolutely fine. If you didn’t keep the bigger fridge you’d be annoyed with the little one. You’ll be happy when you’re moved in.

MotherExtraordinaire · 06/01/2021 22:24

It wouldn't fit in the space at the end of the breakfast bar?

OneEpisode · 06/01/2021 22:24

The photo you showed us was taken from the left to best show the old open space, (to be blocked by the pasted in big fridge).
Once you have your new kitchen, take a photo from the centre, where your new open space will be, created from shortened breakfast bar.
Will be fine.

dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 06/01/2021 22:24

Totally ruins it. That kitchen looks a bit small really for an American =type fridge freezer. Could you keep the smaller integrated one and put your larger one in the garage?

KitchenLayoutHelp · 06/01/2021 22:27

It is too late. Shorter breakfast bar has been ordered and the units for a cupboard rather than an integrated fridge freezer have been ordered. We had to have the breakfast bar as we didn't feel we had enough workspace otherwise. Integrated felt too small. No garage so nowhere to put a bigger one. Tried to go with best option, developers measured it all out so it will work. Just don't think it'll look nice Sad

Yep it’s too big and is going to drive you mad.

Surely some amendments can be made even if at a cost? It’ll be much cheaper now than once fitted.

OneKeyAtATime · 06/01/2021 22:28

I think it s fine

BeneficiaryMadness · 06/01/2021 22:30

How many people in your family?

leroi98 · 06/01/2021 22:30

On the right hand side where the breakfast bar is how far does the wall come out. Are you able to put it there instead& still have room for stalls (if your having them)
