Wheelie bin etiquette for new owners

NCafteroutingpost · 05/01/2021 14:29

We are due to complete 22 January (keeping EVERYTHING crossed!), and it just occurred to me, our 'bin day' will be 25 January, so the wheelie bin is going to be pretty full.

Is there a wheelie bin etiquette out there on how full a wheelie bin should be for your buyers?!

I made sure both our recycling our general waste bins were empty and cleaned out. I took everything to the tip before completion and we had one last bag on the day which our old neighbours kindly said we could put in their bin as they had lots of space. 🙂

BlackPuddingEggs · 05/01/2021 14:33

I think if it’s normal waste that’s OK - if you have binned loads of stuff you don’t want to move rather than take it to the dump that’s less good. But you don’t need to leave it empty. When we moved the son of the elderly owner just emptied the contents of a chest freezer into our green recycling bin. That was grim as we had to take it all out, black bag it and take it to the dump.

I remember when we bought the (now old) house and the bin was completely full the day we moved in. It just wasn't what we needed, one of many issue as it happened, but I do remember thinking that I wouldn't do that if we moved again!!

NCafteroutingpost · 05/01/2021 16:01

Thanks all. I can't remember what the current one was when we moved in, but it doesn't feel right to leave best part of 2 weeks rubbish for them. I think a few trips to the tip are in order!

When we bought this house, the previous owners had taken their wheelie bin with them. We had to buy a new one. Hmm

RoganJosh · 05/01/2021 18:52

But they’ll only have to wait three days until they have an empty bin, would be how I’d see it.
It’s just life isn’t it?

idril · 05/01/2021 18:57

We took as much as we could to the tip and then took the last of the rubbish to the new house with us.

NCafteroutingpost · 05/01/2021 18:59

@VenusClapTrap oh my goodness! I've read on here about someone who took flooring, but a wheelie bin?!

I would be taking my wheelie bin with me so not an issue. Our council don't provide them so everyone that has one brought it

Whatsnewpussyhat · 05/01/2021 19:08

Our bins were full but emptied 2 days later. Wasn't arsed.
Was fucked off that they had filled the brown garden waste bin with everything except garden waste though.

MrsBirkett · 05/01/2021 23:00

when we moved into our house last year all 4 bins were full of all sorts of rubbish. The house had been empty for a couple of weeks before moving in day. We called the local council and they arranged to come and empty them all free of charge.

GrumpyHoonMain · 06/01/2021 00:14

We took everything to the tip the day before.

BellaPixi · 06/01/2021 10:10

We moved in on general waste day so the bin had been emptied that morning...but they had managed to completely fill it again before we got the keys at lunchtime! Had to go 2 full weeks with no bin and couldn’t go to the tip as our permits hadn’t arrived!

Rulesdontapplytome · 06/01/2021 11:09

Who cares. You’ll have gone. And of your new house has a full bin, you’ll have the thick hump that you cleared your old one.

On the plus side, if all you’re worrying about is a bin, then hopefully everything else has gone well.
Good luck.

WombatChocolate · 06/01/2021 11:10

Our neighbour moved just before Christmas. They had gone to the tip the day before (right thing to do) but still created 2 bins bags of rubbish after. They were worried about leaving it, so we put it into ours so they could leave an empty bin.

Leaving an empty bin is the considerate thing to do. Most people though, will produce some rubbish at the last minute I think he throes of cleaning up. Most won’t be able to put it in the neighbours but so the choice is then to take it with you or to leave it. I do t think it’s great to leave the bin totally full so nothing can be added, but one chalk bin bag if stuff is okay. Some people leave a garage full of old carpet, appliances and other crap - not on.

WombatChocolate · 06/01/2021 11:13

Moving is stressful and lots of last minute things do crop up. Lots of people though don’t think ahead and get on top of as much as possible....ie doing a tip run the day before. They might not be able to avoid all rubbish but planning ahead should mean only a small amount is left.

Lots of people also show how little consideration they give to others when they move. Being out under pressure does reveal people’s true colours. They decide they will be gone, so they basically don’t give a shit about rubbish left or dirt.

user1471538283 · 09/01/2021 08:28

In one of our houses I left rubbish in the bin but for our last one we moved out before completion so I put the bins out to be emptied and then locked them in the garage for the buyer. But then my ex neighbour had form for stealing bins.

tappitytaptap · 09/01/2021 10:40

We’ve just moved into a new house and left our wheelie bins pretty full and our new house’s previous owners did the same. We’ve been added to the street WhatsApp group so I think that I will ask on there if anyone has any space in their bin!

KitKat1985 · 09/01/2021 18:11

As long as they still have some room in the bin for their rubbish, I think it's fine to leave some rubbish in it.

cormorantes · 09/01/2021 18:18

My vendors left half a wheelie bin of nappies. Not great, but i could understand moving with two small children would be very hard.

pumkinpopsickle · 09/01/2021 20:13

We have just moved.

The vendors had filled every bin to the top with stuff they no longer wanted.

We moved in the day after the bins were emptied. Meaning we had to take our rubbish to the dump for two weeks while waiting for bin day. Not the end of the world but pretty selfish of them.

MirandaMarple · 09/01/2021 21:13

I wouldn't expect bins at a new property to be empty. Or even have room in. Moving house equates to numerous tip runs, for the new owners.

Romeocorner · 09/01/2021 21:18

Adds wheelie bin to the list of things we need to remember to take with us when we move in a few weeks - thank you

infinitediamonds · 10/01/2021 10:24

I'm sure we left rubbish in the wheelie bin when we moved. But I was heavily pregnant with a chest infection so not a lot I could do about it. We also had a 2 year old. DH left a load of our stuff behind accidentally, our movers hadnt been told where they were going by their boss and had to be paid extra to do the job, the house we were moving into wasnt cleared until late afternoon even with DH helping the movers dismantle furniture. We are never moving again, until possibly we retire. It was that bad.

ReadySteadyBed · 10/01/2021 12:44

Our bins were FULL TO THE BRIM the day we left, didn’t think anything of it.
