Boiler failure!

CrunchyCarrot · 04/01/2021 22:05

Terrible timing, just as lockdown starts. We've an 11 yr old condensing gas Worcester boiler, has been working fine, but this evening it just stopped, can't power it up. Fuse to it is OK, electricity supply OK. So will have to call out the Worcester boiler peeps tomorrow.

Anyone had boiler repairs done during lockdown?

It's bloody freezing, we've only got one small oil-filled radiator, heats one room well, but nothing else in the rest of the house. Time for blankets and jumpers, I guess.

see if you can pick up a couple more electric heaters and an electric blanket in supermarts or DIY sheds.

unfortunately, they usually sell out the day after frosty weather starts.

they are surprisingly cheap in july

oil-filled are safest.

ps,

you haven't got a wireless or "smart" controller, have you?

iswhois · 05/01/2021 10:30

Some on Mnet will say you should freeze to death in solidarity with the rest of the country going through lockdown.

Call someone out! We had to call out an electrician in the first lockdown as half the plug sockets in the house stopped working.

CrunchyCarrot · 05/01/2021 10:32

No, we haven't got a smart controller. I don't really fancy freezing, well my cats would never forgive me!

My DP has been brilliant, he took the cover off and discovered that the 'slow fuse' into the circuit board has blown. We've ordered a new on on Amazon prime, should be here tomorrow! Saves an expensive call out.

Lockdown shouldn't stop boiler engineers coming out - after all, they can hardly work from home!

Mean time, get yourself down to Screwfix asap for some more oil-filled elctric radiators. Argos has them too, but a bit more expensive, and less likely to be in stock today.

if an internal fuse has blown, it suggests there is a fault and the fuse has protected the electronics in the boiler.

fuses do not melt without cause

any sign of a water drip on the board or pump?

CrunchyCarrot · 05/01/2021 21:33

@PigletJohn - yes you're right, it turns out there is another problem (we don't know exactly what). The replacement fuse we ordered arrived and we replaced it, on turning the boiler on, something blew in the region of the fan. DP didn't check for water, at that point we decided to call it a night and phone the boiler people tomorrow.

sympathy from me our boiler is on off on off so we are looking at getting someone in to look at it

DramaAlpaca · 05/01/2021 21:41

Sympathy from me too. I was sure our elderly boiler had gone on the blink last Friday, I couldn't get a squeak out of it and was feeling a bit frantic about getting it fixed. Then I discovered that DH had pushed something up against the mains switch and turned it off.

Hope you get it fixed soon.

CrunchyCarrot · 06/01/2021 21:45

So we have to wait till Saturday for an engineer to come out. Have been staying in our bedroom today with the radiator on, it is now just 10'C downstairs.

@DramaAlpaca Then I discovered that DH had pushed something up against the mains switch and turned it off.

Grin Bet DH was popular!

@isseys4xmastinselcats don't leave it too long to book someone, I know my next door neighbours had to wait 2 weeks to get theirs fixed!

Feel your pain. We have no heating. Thought it was bolier but that is fine. We have a leak somewhere in a wall! Walls possibly ceilings being cut away tomorrow. On the plus side can converse with most plumbers now and know the workings of a boiler intricately! Hope you get yours sorted!

Oh goodness, I do sympathise, leaks are awful! We had a slow leak from a pipe running below the bath, into the ceiling of the room below. Went on for months, caused black mould to grow. Eventually discovered it, had to have a new ceiling!

Good luck with getting it fixed. :)
