Labelling furniture for moving

Mykittensmittens · 30/12/2020 09:50

Clearly labelling boxes isn’t an issue. But furniture?

Last time we moved I used a sheet of sticky labels and they were a mare to get off again.

I’ve seen removable stickers on Amazon but the reviews are poor!

Luggage labels? Seems like the only thing.

Any more sensible suggestions that work?

Thanks

I just told our removers where to put them. I assume you’re not available?

DappledThings · 30/12/2020 10:13

As above. I didn't label any furniture, I just stood at the door and directed each piece as it was brought in.

We are told to keep our distance and we are moving a fair amount - there will be four removal people so I won’t be able to watch everything. Plus I think I’ll be the last one out of this house as I’ll be giving it a last clean and hoover.

I didn’t label the furniture, even though I was only taking half of it. I walked the movers round and pointed out what was going, and they had no difficulty remembering.

The standing in the door thing at the other end can be quite a bit of pressure - they are quite fast moving and there isn’t much time off.

When we moved last, we have a colour for each room. We had a small local firm who managed fine with this crazy & controlling method.

With boxes I labelled the content on one side, but also did coloured circle on the top and each side (with arrows showing which way up to have the box) so could easily see which room the box belonged to.

For furniture, I wrapped coloured wool round where I could - so around handles, spindles, legs etc. I felt they were less likely to come off than luggage labels, although I was finding on furniture for weeks afterwards!

We moved last month. One of you stay behind at the old house to clean. The other one goes to the new house and directs the removal company. Everyone wear a mask.
No requirement for labelling furniture, even during lockdown

I just stood outside near the van and shouted out back bedroom, dining room, yellow bedroom etc at them as they unloaded.

SeaToSki · 30/12/2020 11:32

Just did it. Masking/painters tape with black pen

I pointed it out to the movers on a couple of sofas and cabinets, so when they wrapped the pieces to go in the lorry, theymoved the tape to the outside of the wrapping

I also gave them a drawing of the house with each room labelled with the names i used of the furnitures tags. The bedrooms got names based on the wall color so it was easier for them to remember

MrsLorensen · 30/12/2020 11:34

Wide masking tape on everything.

caringcarer · 30/12/2020 11:54

Coloured post it notes the tiny ones.

LittleBearPad · 30/12/2020 11:58

Post it’s would work. As would standing outside yelling rooms. Make them a plan with names.

Even if your hoovering presumably your partner can do it. If you don’t have one tell them to use their suss and wait for if really confused. A kitchen table eg isn’t going to go in a bedroom.

Used a mix of luggage tags and very expensive very low tack masking tape - frog tape or similar. Worked well for us and no marks left on furniture as long as taken off with care.

Mykittensmittens · 30/12/2020 13:03

Thanks. I will mark some pieces as it isn’t obvious. Masking tape sounds sensible. Eg we will have two ‘sitting’ rooms and it absolutely wouldn’t be clear which pieces are for which rooms. DH will have to improve his memory skills as he will be at that end.

What about things for the loft? Do you just ask them to put them in one of the upstairs rooms and move them yourself later?

If you've got a decent removal company they'll put them in the loft for you

LittleBearPad · 30/12/2020 13:11

Can’t DH hoover? It’s really not very hard in an empty house

LittleBearPad · 30/12/2020 13:12

I’d ask them to put them up for you. You may have to reorganise later but will give you less stuff to work around.
