Milton Keynes living

Looking to relocate as baby on the way.
What is MK like to live in?
Any recommendations for good villages?
Need somewhere well connected by bus, I don't drive due to health reasons?
Would prefer somewhere vaguely pretty and with as little deprivation as possible - somewhere good for families and good schools with community feel.
A lot to ask, I know!
Budget about £350-400k.
Thanks!

Hi. I love in MK and grew up around here so know it well. There are lots of lovely places - mainly outside of the central areas - and like anywhere, you’ll pay more for somewhere with “little deprivation” and good schools.

As a general rule, have a look on a map - if the grid square has mainly straight parallel roads within it, avoid. This is the info I was given by someone involved in town planning! His words “sounds a bit fascist, but it’s true”. Areas such as Fishermead, Oldbrook, Beanhill are part of the original plan and have aged badly. Of course there will still be nicer houses within them, but as an area generally, especially as there’s so many nicer new areas to choose from, I’d avoid.

The main problem you’ll have is that MK is designed for cars - the whole ‘city’ is based on the grid road system which makes driving everywhere quick and easy, but bus services are not known to be amazing here. Most bus journeys mean having to travel into the city centre to swap onto a different bus and then go back out again. A 5 minute car ride can be a 1 hour bus journey.

So I’d suggest finding out where you want to live and then checking out bus routes just in case (although to be fair, a taxi from the shopping centre to the outer grid squares would be less than £10 so it may be cheaper to do that than to drive anyway, once you take into account parking, fuel, insurance etc! )

If you want somewhere older with a bit of character, then MK village, Loughton, Woughton on the Green etc are very pretty, but prices would put me off a little there, especially if you end up having to travel for school. I’m in Middleton, which has some of the best schools and is quite expensive, but just a general 1990s build type of estate, nothing special. (Was lucky to get a good deal on our house!) If I had to move anywhere else I’d look at Newport Pagnell, a small town of its own now within the MK boundary, Furzton (pretty lake) or Brooklands - nice parklands - I think.

A more self contained area like Stony Stratford, Newport Pagnell or one of the nicer parts of Bletchley might suit you better, as you’d have easy access to MK but also have your own shops and banks, takeaways and pubs etc on your doorstep.

Most grid squares have a small shop (Tesco express or Budgens etc) which you could walk to, but for a bit more choice and interest, one of the places above would be better for you if you don’t drive. HTH

*live in MK, although I love it too!

SuperheroBirds · 29/12/2020 17:22

Loughton is lovely. There is a lot of green space, but it is a quick walk over to Milton Keynes station.

GrumpyHoonMain · 29/12/2020 20:46

I used to live there and one of the reasons we moved is that within the city (with easily public transport links) there really isn’t much in the way of outstanding schools with little deprivation. Even Loughton and Shenley Brook end which are fairly posh have their drug problems now with teens scooting around to customers at all hours of the day and night and gang issues with local schools. Plus buses that don’t go to town or the railway station are notoriously unreliable.

If you need to live near MK because of work then I would probably recommend going to live in Buckinghamshire towns and villages - Winslow is decent and within catchment of the Buckinghamshire grammar schools.

PresentingPercy · 29/12/2020 21:27

I would look at the existing towns in and around MK. Winslow is a good shout. Lacks a decent supermarket though but is getting a new station and the Varsity Line is being reestablished opening up Oxford and MK. Buckingham also has a lot to offer. Be aware that Bucks has grammar schools and MK does not. Lots of MK DC attend Aylesbury and Buckingham grammars though from western and southern MK.

I do quite like Stony Stratford and Newport Pagnell. Olney is very attractive and my friends are very happy in Wolverton. They love the community spirit there. I would avoid most of the new city I’m afraid. Bletchley is ok around the Bletchley Park site.

Smartiepants79 · 29/12/2020 21:35

Newport Parnell and stony are both good places to start. Avoid the estates that directly surround the city centre shopping.
You don’t say what kind of property you’re looking for but 400k may not go as far as you might think. We moved within Mk 3 years ago. We looked all over, we wanted detached, 4 beds bit of a garden, in a reasonable area etc... we would have had to spend at least 450k
We picked somewhere about 10 mins out instead and got a lot more for our money.

Smartiepants79 · 29/12/2020 21:37

Not Bletchley!! I grew up there and it’s not the place it was. The shopping street is a line of charity shops and pound shops.

Passthewinebottle · 29/12/2020 22:58

I've got family in Deanshanger, lovely out that way. And agreed re Stony Stratford, Newport Pagnell, also Willen Park, Loughton, Middleton. I will say though, lots end up Northants because MK is so expensive now! Xx

TheSpottedZebra · 29/12/2020 23:08

Do you cycle? MK is great for cycling.

OneEpisode · 29/12/2020 23:14

The Redways run parallel to the main roads and are ideal for cycling on (no busy roads to cross because they go over or under). If you can use a bike (electrically assisted maybe) that gives you some more options. MK has some lovely parks too.

coronafiona · 29/12/2020 23:29

Have a look at Leighton buzzard and the nearby villages- the brick hills too

PresentingPercy · 30/12/2020 00:46

There is a cycle way from Buckingham to Winslow and on to MK. Winslow is a lot more rural but your money would go a bit further. It really depends what you want/need immediate access to.

I used to drive through three times a year going to a festival and the roundabouts were bonkers. Just so many..no idea what it's like to live there..!!

It makes it really quick and easy to get everywhere as there are never traffic jams and if you take a wrong turn you can just correct yourself at the next roundabout! It does cause some extra wear on your tyres Grin but I find driving anywhere else really annoying these days. I went to Bristol last year and got stuck when my sat nav kept sending me the same way back through a closed road. Every turn I took led me back there in the end - it was hellish! I’ve been ever more appreciative of the roundabouts in MK ever since Grin

We've just moved away from mk because we just couldn't get on with the place. But people who have been there a long time seem to love it.
Stony Stratford is nice with strong community feel. It's in catchment for bucks secondary I think. Olney is really nice but expensive and traffic between there and mk is an issue. Woburn area seems nice but not sure of the schools. I think Wolverton is up and coming but I'd worry about the schools currently.
Towcester is nice as well as Winslow and Buckingham.
I agree with pp about the car thing. That's one of the things I didn't like, have to drive everywhere.
Where are you relocating from?

MK was designed for the car but with cycle routes and car free paths. I’m old enough to remember the individual towns and villages with fields inbetween! The Lakes estate in Bletchley was the first one built and housed what was called “London overspill”. It’s hard to imagine what the whole MK designated area looked like back then.

The centre is fairly spread out and I’ve always wondered why the centre wasn’t built around the station. Everything you need is blocks and blocks away and the theatre and snow dome about as far as you can get! It’s linear which isn’t great by modern standards either. However you have to remember MK was built for cars with a few local amenities.

HH21 · 30/12/2020 10:14

MK is great for cycling. Having lived there for a few years (as a graduate coming from London) I found the area quite depressing, and the only thing that kept me relatively sane was living very close to some very close friends. As others have said, it was designed around the car, and not having one meant that I felt quite isolated. Everything is miles apart (even the nearest Tesco or post office can seem a mission to get to).

Smartiepants79 · 30/12/2020 11:15

I agree that the station is away from the centre but there are good bus links and it’s a only a 10 minute walk.
Every grid square/ estate has its own amenities- shop, take away...
