House search ceiling height

Hello everyone, We have been searching for a house for a long time. We recently found a house which has five bedrooms, two receptions, three baths and a large kitchen. We were happy and we quickly put an offer on it after one viewing. It got accepted and now we are in the middle of processing. Now I have realised that the whole house had low ceiling height of 2.1m. I am very stressed that the house won’t be desirable no matter how much we spend on renovation. This house is also quite expensive but the low ceiling height has put me off and I keep thinking about it. What should I do now? Please help. Thanks

Silly question - but did you not notice the lower ceiling height when you viewed it? If not - why worry about it now?

PragmaticWench · 28/12/2020 20:39

Ours is low-ish at 2.29 and it was noticeable to me when we first viewed. Surely 2.10 you would instantly notice when you viewed?

Chumleymouse · 28/12/2020 20:39

Are you sure it’s 2.1 ? That’s low ,I thought new builds now were 2.3 ?

Viviennemary · 28/12/2020 20:41

That's extremely low. Are you sure you mean 2.1 metres. That isn't even 7 feet. Most ceilings are 8-9 feet in an average house.

That is very low. We briefly rented a new build with ceilings that high. It was oppressive and furniture like contemporary bookcases didn’t fit. It would not be for me. You need to view it again.

I checked my measurements again it’s 7 feet height around 2.2 meters. How much is the average ceiling height in UK houses. Here where we live most of the houses we viewed were 2.2 meter to 2.3 meters height ceiling. I thought it’s a norm here. Very rarely house ceilings were 2.4meters.

The ceilings in current house are 2.4m I think new builds now are 2.3 , the ceilings in our last house were 2.8 , I think 2.4 is fine it’s definitely warmer than the old house.

Viviennemary · 28/12/2020 21:42

I think you should give it a miss. It's a large house so why would it have such a low ceiling height. It's below average. And higher ceilings do give the impression of more space.

Apparentlystillchilled · 28/12/2020 21:45

2.4m is standard for new builds. I'd swerve it.

Thank you all for your replies👍

We have one room with a ceiling that low - over the kitchen - and it’s a nightmare to get furniture in and out of and it feels really oppressive. We use it just as a guest room. I can’t imagine living in a house with all ceilings that low. I’d keep looking if I were you.
