Rental - getting rid of plant pot mark?!

WTF0ver · 28/12/2020 18:18

I had a fern in the bathroom of our rental flat which we're handing the keys back to soon. After having the plant a few weeks I noticed a red ring from the plant pot saucer had appeared on the white wooden windowsill.

It doesn't appear to rub off with water. How can I get rid of it or disguise it? Not sure if a little white paint would do the trick.

Thanks

Try Cif cream cleanser. It's mildly abrasive so may lift the mark without the need for you to paint the entire windowsill

Ok thanks I'll give that a try.

Magic sponge.. Ultimately you could repaint the windowsill.

Don't bother. You won't get your deposit back, people rarely do because landlords just find any excuse not to pay out.

Might as well leave it like a shit tip Grin

Is that the case? I've never rented before this and we were there only 2 months. Hopefully they won't try to sting me for too much Confused

assuming you are in England, your deposit must legally be protected in a scheme. Any deductions must be proved by the landlord. Damage charges are pro-rated by the age of the item and the amount of it damaged. Generally resulting in a charge of the square root of fuck all even if a tenant wrecks the place.

the old 'landlords can walk off with the whole deposit' trope has been illegal since 2007. of course you may have rented a shithole from a crook in London (as do most on here) but the law is on your side.

how to rent on gov.uk tells you how it all works. And if your landlord didn't commit you to a minimum 6 months he/she is clearly clueless. Get informed, you hold all the cards.

..although frankly you may as well destroy it and pay no rent, there's no enforcement or comeback and no eviction possible at the moment.

not suggesting that of course!

You will get your deposit back - we did despite a few extra dents on the wooden floor from DS using his plastic hammer from play tool box too vigourously

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/12/2020 17:59

Could you leave the plant pot behind? Maybe even glue it down!

I'm in Scotland, the deposit is held by a scheme. We can give 28 days notice here to leave a tenancy. It's through an agency as well. We moved into our new house a couple of weeks ago so just been getting things sorted at the flat before I hand the keys back.

I've already got the plant at my new place. They'd probably remove it anyway.
