Would you be happy with this tiling?

We’ve been having a wet room fitted at our house and I’ve just been to see it for the first time today. The tiles have been cut in random directions and most cuts are not straight and look like they are smashed!

I know there needs to be a slope for the water to drain, but this seems an absolute bodged mess? I have grounds to complain here surely?

No definitely not.

PegLegTrev · 28/12/2020 17:06

That’s atrocious.

Coffeeandcocopops · 28/12/2020 17:09

It is the floor I assume. What are the walls like?

missrks · 28/12/2020 17:09

Holy fuck!

Alonelonelyloner · 28/12/2020 17:13

Wow
What a fucking mess.
Professional tilers would weep looking at that.
Demand a refund or threaten small claims.

LaFla1 · 28/12/2020 17:18

Don’t think my last picture posted! Here’s a picture I’ve just taken (in the dark as electric board is being changed over) from a different angle.

@LaFla1

I stupidly paid for the work they’ve completed (so far) when I received a sob story on Christmas Eve about wages. Can’t believe I’ve been such an idiot.

Such a shame you have been done like this. The work is awful.

I have a rule and never lay up front. Having said that none of the contractors we have used have asked.

Anyone that gives sob story's about laying wages like this is in a dodgy financial footing..and is usually more about making sure you don't refuse to pay.

The upside is if it is a local business they will be susceptible to pressure to sort it out. They won't want that on the local com h it's Facebook page will they?

Email the boss and Kay out your complaint with photos and demand he comes and I sleets it. Agree a rectification plan.

If no satisfaction then go to the small claims court... but that is another thread

Thanks so much for all of your advice everyone. Trades can be so convincing in explaining away their shoddy work, so it’s great to know that I’m not being over the top.

Just for context, the house is Victorian and the company added extra costs on during the first few days of the job due to walls and floor not meeting their ‘standards’. Even so, and particularly after paying for this to be corrected, the work is terrible. I’ve noticed dodgy cuts around the ceiling which have been filled with thick grout, holes drilled in random places, tile trim (that I did not want in the first place!) full of deep scratches.

The floor tile grout also doesn’t align with the wall grout - is this normal?

Hi, if this is a wet room are you sure that it’s been properly waterproofed/tanked etc. We bought a house with a wet room and it was a horrible nightmare. If this is their tiling effort, are you sure it has been properly waterproofed underneath ?

NoParticularPattern · 28/12/2020 20:14

That looks like I’ve done it- blindfolded! And I’ve never tiled before so that ought to give you an idea of how terrible it is. Unless there was an incredibly excellent reason for the way they’ve done it I would expect them to start over and do it properly or give you your money back and you source a tiler elsewhere!

Murinae · 28/12/2020 20:57

That looks seriously awful. Also what does the water drain into down that hole? When we had a wet room the drain was much larger and was a metal drain thingy tiled in that you could lift a filter part out to wash and clean when it got full of hair.

Smallgoon · 28/12/2020 21:26

Hmmm, I can't really see what the issue is. Don't look too dissimilar to my tiled shower floor.

Murinae · 28/12/2020 21:29

Something like this

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 28/12/2020 21:30

If my 10yo had done it, I'd be impressed. I wouldn't be impressed if I'd done it, let alone paid someone to do it

Smallgoon · 28/12/2020 21:35

Here's the tiled floor of my shower. As you've mentioned, the tiles are supposed to be sloped. I can't see a massive difference between mine and yours...

Bluntness100 · 28/12/2020 21:41

That looks really bad. I lightened it to have a look properly and it is very uneven. They are clearly struggling with it.

I’ve just had my bathroom redone, it’s an old listed building with no straight wall. They refused to do a wet room as they said it would be too problematic if something went wrong in the future,, and that was even with the floor being taken up and completely relaid. Under the shower tray there is three layers of flooring, maybe four.

The walls are not straight but they did a fantastic job of making them look straight with the way the tiles were laid.

In addition we had a survey done before they finalised the quote, due to the age of the property, they insisted. The price didn’t change they just wanted to be sure before they took a deposit.

I think you’ve a shoddy company there and I’d be wanting to be very sure that your property is suitable for a wet room in the first place. However I think that needs to come up, becayse it’s not about the tiling, it’s about what the hell is underneath it and is it secure enough that no leaks.

Can you really not see the difference?
Bluntness100 · 28/12/2020 21:44

Smallgoon. Can you see it in the lightened pics?

The drain looks really small for the area, and I would expected it to be central to allow for symmetrical sloping.

Chalfontstgiles · 28/12/2020 21:56

Poor workmanship.

SD1978 · 28/12/2020 22:03

The 'good' picture from their website doesn't have the tiles as symmetrical either- from what I can see? Do you have a further away picture for a proper comparison? The grout levels are definitely an issue- but their website shows an uneven tile pattern too?

Bluntness100 · 29/12/2020 06:42

It’s not so much the tiles are uneven, it’s they are cracked and messily placed. It’s an eye sore.

Op, was no one in the house when they did the pipe work and flooring? I’d be really worried about what was underneath that. It could be fine, just the person tiling doesn’t have the skills to do it.

As it needs to be redone, are you sure you want a wet room? If you get a leak they are hugely expensive to fix, you basically have to take up the tiled area, buy new tiles and relay it, where as with a tray you just lift the tray, fix the leak, put it back.

As said we were originally going for a wet room and the fitters said no, we have instead a slim line/low profile shower tray, like this one.

You can also get them in different colours, for example here is a slate grey one that would match your tiles.

Bluesheep8 · 29/12/2020 07:35

Awful. Do not pay the bill. Not a penny. Take lots of pictures and contact trading standards.

Op has said she has already paid for the work so far.

LaFla1 · 29/12/2020 13:02

Well, I’ve spoken to the owner of the company this morning and he claims he is as shocked as we are about the state of the work and he has assured me that all the issues I raised with him will be corrected.

Fingers crossed it will all get sorted.

Thanks again for the advice everyone.

Glad he reacted like that op, hope it's rectified soon.
